PS2 games on the PSN

Sony has announced Only On PSN, a new campaign to promote PlayStation Network exclusive games throughout October.

At least one exclusive PSN title will be released each week throughout the month, starting this Wednesday with Rochard.

In the US, the confirmed line-up is Eufloria and Rochard for this week and Sideway: New York for next.

Charming cel-shaded Okabu and Rocketbirds arrive the week after, with standalone vampire expansion inFamous 2: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller rounding out the month.

Finally, this week will also see a selection of "rare classic" PlayStation 2 titles made available to download: God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red. Will Sony now bring PS2 games to PS3 games on a regular basis?

PSN Plus members receive a 20 per cent discount on each Only On PSN title the week it's released.

Meanwhile, gamers who spend more than $60 on any PlayStation Network content - games, themes, movies, whatever - get a $10 credit towards their November shopping. European discounts are still to be confirmed.

Only On PSN follows this summer's PlayStation Network Play campaign - Sony's first real attempt at rivalling the Xbox 360's Summer of Arcade.

PSN Play featured titles such as Renegade Ops and The Baconing, although unlike the XBLA Summer of Arcade, none were platform exclusives.

That's because Microsoft won't ship Xbox Live Arcade games unless they are released at least simultaneously with competing platforms, European Xbox boss Chris Lewis previously confirmed to Eurogamer.

Many of the titles featured were funded in-part by Sony through the Publisher Fund it created a couple of years ago. This summer saw the platform giant add $20 million extra cash to the Pub Fund pot.

    As seen here on eurogamer

Looks like they might start bringing PS2 games to the PSN store. would be a fantastic leap if they did. Always wanted to try GodHand but never saw it for less than 30 quid.

Between that, maybe FFX, MGS2+3 and Jak and Daxter, I've never turn on another console :D

Stupid question, but how will they run on the PS3?

I thought they weren't backwards compatible?

Will it be only a select few games I wonder

Not sure to be honest. Here's another article from thesixthaxis:
We’ve just spoken to Sony and can confirm that European PS3 owners can also look forward to PS2 games coming to their console – exciting news for anyone doubting the validity of our earlier post this morning.

“The Only On PlayStation Network programme is for the SCEA region only,” said a SCEE spokesperson to TheSixthAxis.

“However, we will be bringing the majority of the content to the SCEE audience, including Classic PS2 titles.” Note the capital letter, which might suggest that’s the official line.

It sounds like it doesn’t end there, either.

“We have numerous exciting offers that we will be introducing to PSN users throughout our region in the lead up to Christmas and look forward to sharing these with you.”

Exciting stuff, if Sony can get the right PS2 titles out there for us…

Kinda suggests that they are porting specific games maybe?

    God Hand and Odin Sphere?

    **** yes.

EDIT: And then this happens. The "majority" of content had better include the above titles.

They're all great games. GrimGrimoire is a fantastic RTS type game, kind of weird but has some of the best 2D visuals on the system. Ring of Red is brilliant as well. It looks very basic but it's a great turn based strategy title. Maximo has aged quite a bit though.

It mentions in that article and in the second one I posted that the content being brought over includes the PS2 games.

Just hope this doesnt dissolve into the way the PS1 Classics has, where we wait months for decent games to come out while being flooded with Disney Interactive titles.

I think like Tallon said, I'm more happy that we can confirm PS2 titles are able to be released via the PSN even if we don't know how its working yet.

It'll take a while before I become disappointed with the selection but they gave us some good ones to start off with :)

The slow pace is mostly due to licencing, Disney can easily get their games onto psn due to this as they lack 3rd party licences that could hamper them.

I'd think it would be emulation, as to do otherwise would involve a lot of work per game.

I have my lovely 60GB so this is only helpful if the games are rare ones that i can't find.

Well I remember enjoying it when it came out but it was too tough for its own good. The sequel is much better.
