Can you mix run flats with regular for NCT?

    Hi there,

I bought myself new wheels with tyres last night, 3 of the tyres are excellent but one is knackered its a 285/45/19 (wider back) so expensive!

But they came with a second set of tyres (runflats) 3 are good one is ok inside of it is slightly worn also a 285/45/19

My question is could I use one of the run flats with 3 regular tyres for the NCT to save buying an extra now?

You can't safely fit runflat tyres onto alloys that aren't designed for them so it depends moreso on the wheels you bought.

the wheels originally had runflats but were changed to regular previously, do you think mixing runflats and non will pass the NCT?

It shouldn't be an NCT issue but would you not be as well fitting the 4 runflats?

Having 3 standard tyres and 1 runflat would have fairly obvious effects on the handling especially on such low profile and wide tyres.

If they are the same size tyre then I think the NCT will be happy (assuming treat, etc are ok) but as others have mentioned, it may not be the most prudent thing to have a mix especially coming into winter.

I think the best thing then is to throw on the run flats and wear them out then i have a "cheeper" set of non-runflats to wear out....

    Thanks for all the advice!

Once you have a matching pair on each axle you should be alright. I can't say with 100% certainty that it will pass but the manual does state that any tyres in each axle must be the same size, thread pattern. I can't see the two run flats on the same axle causing a problem however having one runflat and one non runflat on the same axle is only begging for trouble ( 2 different grip and handling characteristics one the same axle) I would certainly not drive it with one of each on the same axle :(

There's no mention of matching thread pattern in the NCT manual.

i would think 1 runflat and 1 standard tyre on an axel would fail you because you would have an imbalance for shock absorber test, runflats are much harder than standard tyres
