When people talk about having 'knots' in their calfs, what are they talking about, and what do they feel like?

Think it's happened me a few times on the bike where my calf has literally morphed, like a spasm.
Had to get out of the saddle and stretch and then it would happen for a while as I sped up.

Hard bumps inside the calf. I think people call them trigger points too. I had one so big you could see it when I stood in a certain way. I get them in my neck and back too. If you grind into them or use the roller enough they break up. Feels great.

They're usually caused by scar tissue after injuries (knot is a very generic term really), you can probably feel tightness in the area or feel an area being rock hard or even 'bumpy' if you glide something over a relaxed muscle.

Get a foam roller/sliotar/massage and get it worked out. Severly effects the muscle flexibililty and muscle function and can just lead to further injury (and slows you down)

Thanks, that explains it. I've had problems with my achilles over the last few weeks and I reckoned it had to do with my calf, so over the weekend I've been stretching and using the foam roller. There is what feels like a hard lump in the calf, I've pulled this twice over the last couple of years so it might be scar tissue. I'll keep on with the roller a see if it improves, otherwise I'll get professional help.

I find Golf balls are also good for getting right in at the problem point, usually i'd start with the foam roller and then use the golf ball.. But i'v still gimpy calf's so maybe you shouldnt listem to me :)
