    OPEN LETTER

Re: Teresa Treacy, 65-year-old woman jailed 12th September 2011

    Dear Sir,

I wish to protest in the strongest terms the treatment of a citizen of this State, by the State.

Ms. Teresa Treacy, 65 years of age, of Woodfield, Clonmore, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland, was jailed on the 12th of September 2011, for failing to comply with court orders permitting EirGrid and the ESB to run power line with pylons through her property. To date she is still being held in the Dóchas Centre at Mountjoy Prison.

In press releases, the companies involved have stated that they have completed their work. As such, where is the sense in continuing to incarcerate this woman?

Can an individual not defend themselves and their property against the bully boy tactics of the agents of the State? Are the rights of the semi-state corporations to be placed above those of the citizen? And in the final analysis, is the might is right attitude of the State, an expression of equality and justice for all?

The citizens of Ireland have suffered much from bad leadership and the corporate influence on that leadership. Are we to be spiritually bankrupt as well? Where is the pride in being Irish and knowing the right thing to do? Is your legacy to be that you were only obeying the orders of the Court, without regard to the lack of natural justice that they possess?

In the past, I had a certain regard for you and your stance on the issue of civil liberties.

In conclusion, I would also appeal to the Presidential candidates, who are full of the ‘talk’ of Ireland, to walk the walk, and defend this citizen of Ireland.

    Regards,

    Declan Tracey
