    Fixed your post :)

Famous crash done by Auto Motor und Sport (Germany) about 20 years ago, iirc?

Haven't seen this clip in years, thanks for sharing!

Mad how the Merc doesn't move back in inch.

It doesn't move back because it's way heavier than Corsa.

Physics always apply and nothing can change it.

It would be interesting to see how the W140 would fare against modern vehicles. I'd say it would be a 3 star EuroNCAP car at best - but its weight would still be a major factor in a crash with a lighter vehicle.

It's hard to find pics of real life crashes between W140s and other cars. Here's one I found, a rear ender rather than a head on, Megane hits S class.

TBH the the amazing thing is that Corsa wasn't flung into a nearby field! Nice engineering by Opel I say.

No it isnt. Your test shows a new car with different crumple points hitting a car designed around different crumple ethos. The original video was with era similar cars was it not?

Regardless, a modern "tank" vs a Polo, both with the same era crumple zones shows again that the bigger heavy car doesnt "go backwards":

Infact in that test the bigger car fares even better than the old Merc test. Great NCAP rating doesnt help a small car thats flung into the another lane with other traffic now does it? :p

Didn't think about getting flung into the other lane! Yikes, scary thought!

Not enough people. Plenty just assume it'll never happen to them.

A friend of mine was only just telling last night about a guy from her home town who died in a crash in the small hours of the morning in some done up car. Same guy's brother did jail time related to another crash where people were killed a few years ago apparently. Some cousin of theirs also died in a drink related crash. Seems like a particularly bad lot of drivers around that area as when i head out that way I meet so many idiots on the road, and see loads of those little crosses/monuments/little bunches of flowers and candles etc. and every few weeks there seems to be another crash out that way.

Same with other places too. I always seem to be hearing about serious crashes around mitchelstown/fermoy and between killarney and tralee, abbeyfeale to newcastlewest sort of areas too.
I suppose they're all areas with some bad roads in between and enough distance to make people want to go fast.

And just down the road from me there's been 4 crashes in 3 years at the same bend when people come into it too fast, loads of spots like that around but people just don't learn.

Those videos arent of high speed accidents. They are similar to outcome from the type of stupid overtaking people do, which generally arent particuallry high speed. The OTT focus on "slowing down" is detrimental to road safety IMO. I see people taking risks with their lives and others every day on the roads and I fully admit probably I drive faster than they do on average but I just plan my moves better.

its all about size and weight , the fiat 500s cabin is compromised and the a pillar destroyed, doesnt even look like the cabin was damaged at all on the Q7

    ...........

Mad how the Merc doesn't move back in inch.

Conceptually, if they're both going the same speed 'twould be fairly looney if the Merc did move back an inch :)

Well yes, that's obvious, I was more pointing out the fact of what I'd rather be driving, lol.

I'm going to patent reactive armour for the Fiat 500.
It should be possible to vaporise the Q7. :pac:

Both cars in a 2 car collision cant really be pushed back in the direction they came from.

that political leader with nazi links killed a few yrs back was driving a phaeton luxobarge and not going so fast.

Aye but do that crash ten times over and I'm fairly sure the Merc will win each and every time.

According to Wikipedia he was doing over double the speed limit, came off the road and rolled down an embankment.

I don't know if it's comparable to the car-on-car impacts being discussed here.

Surely you didn't get the impression (or think that people were suggesting) from this thread that driving a big car makes you invincible on the road?

I thought the same. Looks like the air bag burst and that's what forced the "driver's" head out the window.
