So I've been mostly watching the rte coverage for the world cup but I do on occasion switch over to the likes of utv either half time or full time just to see what there saying about us in case we have the rose tinted glasses on or for another point of view

Anyway today on utv they were doing how they saw the rest of the world cup panning out with Michael Lynagh and Lawrence Dallaglio.
So one side they had new zealand coming through, give there reasons fair enough. On our side they go on about both england and france are both out of form but that england will go through, then they say how both us and wales are the form teams but our experience will bring us through.
Next onto us and england........england to go they say based on there forwards no question.....aye here I haven't the greatest knowledge of game but although england could put the ball up the jumper and grind out a result they haven't been playing the greatest and there off field antics haven't helped either.I fear playing wales alot more than playing england at the minute

Maybe I should underline the bit about my lack of knowledge of the game

No surprises that they backed England tbh, just makes it all the sweeter when we beat them in the semis :D

There is only Wales at the moment, and anyone talking about playing England/France/New Zealand etc should try and keep themselves in check. There's no point in getting upset about what people are saying about an imaginary match that may or may not happen just yet.

    Amen to that.

Wales then there's Wales and in addition, Wales followed by Wales.

    It's a different mentality.

England not playing well UTV look at their positives as to why they can win.

Ireland not playing well RTE look at their negatives as to why they can't win.

It's not UTV, It is an ITV Network feed - They are always going to have an English bias.

ITV is made up of former international players, captains and RWC-winners.
Bar Conor O'Shea, none of RTE's panel has been involved with professional rugby.

In RTE's case controversy makes cash. For some reason the Irish public lap it up. ITV like to bill everything up, which i actually like because sometimes its nice to let yourself go and get excited by the hoopla. I also love that ITV have put a lot of effort into the production level and their line up. Setanta are a mix between both although have the lowest production level. I like what they do. There is no B/S like RTE by trying to be controversial for the sake of it or ITV by not trying to upset people. BUT at the early hours of the morning, im not interested in controversy or setanta's style. I just want to keep my brain switched off and be swept along with the hype of ITV.

Have to agree with you there son, plus you dont have to listen to george hook either on ITV which is a plus :D

In 2007 in the 6N's we blitzed England and beat them by 30 points. Fast forward a few months and we go out in the group stages and they march into another final. I think we're a better team with better players but you can't deny their pedigree when it comes to the biggest stage.

Anyway its completely hypothetical, its not like Wales and France are cannon fodder.

UTV did their own coverage in Ireland games of previous World Cups. Why they haven't done any this time around is strange but maybe they no longer have either the money or the sports expertise to do it anymore - I don't think they have much of a sports department left now and have given up practically all sporting rights they had in their own right to the BBC. They've done some pieces on UTV Live Tonight but that's about it.

Both STV and ITV Wales have done their own coverage of Scotland and Wales games respectively.

Setanta is far superior IMO. Williams and Francis are a great pair and know the game inside out.

ITV are flag waving English and RTE are supposed to be flag waving Irish but end up just criticising their own team.

Setanta's positivity and balance in its analysis win out for me.

Why has RTE only shown Irish games?

Why has RTE only shown Irish games?

It's all they had the rights for during the pool stages. They have the rights to all games from now on i.e. QFs, SFs, Final..

Setanta had excellent coverage this morning. Preferred their coverage this morning as I was particularly interested in what Ciaran Fitzgerald had to say about the front row battle during commentary itself. Had very good insightful commentary on the front row battle as the game went along being a front row warrior himself.

Matt and Franno are definitely different to RTE panel on RWC and give them a good run for their money.

As for RTE, Popey and Conor O'Shea superb and I can do without GH - awful windbag at the best of times and just there to stir it up for any auld reason at all.

Setanta's coverage overall has been really good.
    Well done.

Does anyone know where to watch the games or highlight shows of NZ/Aussie tv channels ?

Watched some stuff on rugbyworldcup.com but cant any more due to player issues but the commentary and voice over on those were dire anyway.

    Anyone any ideas ?

You're absolutely right re UTV. AFAIK they haven't covered any sport with proper OB for some time now. They used to cover NW200 motor cycle races but BBC have had that for last few years. Believe it or not they briefly had coverage of Ulster matches vs touring sides in 1980's e.g. Ulster vs Fiji Barabarians and Ulster vs Queensland but it was shortlived.

Setanta have been the best choice throughout. RTE have only had Irelands games & off course you want to keep up with what Hook says but to be honest Williams & Francis are head & shoulders above them.

They analyze the games perfectly, Neil Francis has toned it down and now just speaks perfect sense( in 2007 hecwas trying to be Setantas George Hook)

ITV is just stale. The poor Brits must pine for John Inverdale, Jeremy Guscott & Jonathan Davies

and as for phil vickery as co commentator..... jaysus !!!!!
not only has he a face id love to punch, but he also has the most annoying, grating, high-pitched voice as well.... on top of which he would bore the knickers off a nun...

I hate Inverdale and Guscott. They always come across as being pompous pricks. Davies is great though.

I don't enjoy the Setanta commentators. I was listening to them after one game and they were banging on about a decision a referee had made but they themselves had misinterpreted it.

I enjoy the RTE commentry but agree that McGurk seems to enjoy winding up Hook too much and should let the panel talk more.

Out of all the media I deal with in a match-week and on match-day, the BBC crew are absolutely dead-on, John Inverdale and Jeremy Guscott included. Can't speak highly enough of them and don't find them arrogant in the slightest. A pleasure to work with.

Ireland V Wales without Jonathan Davies and Keith Wood is just wrong.

Agree with this, Setanta have been excellent. Really enjoying the commentary, Ciaran Fitzgerald's description of Ferris's monster hit on Castro was perfection:

'He hit him an awful smack'.

I just can't abide Hook, it's like watching and listening to a cranky Jabba the Hutt.

Jonathan Davies is on BBC Wales Scrum V but strange there is no Keith Wood on TV during RWC as ITV are using both Sky pundits (Michael Lynagh) and BBC (Lawrence Dallaglio).

He can't inflect his voice either. Monotone and breathless at the same time. Says nothing of use.

ITV has really P'd me off. Quinny and Girvan are great though (no bias :) )

I've been watching ITV coverage of Irish games, because I can't stand Hook and Franno and I think Quinny is the best co-commentator around. All the rest are okay, but he stands out a mile.

Setanta coverage is fantastic if a bit low key.

Always watch 6N on BBC - infinitely prefer it and it's a shame they don't get the world cup.

Will only watch on Setanta. Tom McGurk, more than anything else, turns me off RTÉ.
