    Hi all,

I recently got an iphone 4. When I connected it to my laptop it says there was an update available which ive been trying to install. I spend 2 hours downloading it and then it stops and says that my connection has timed out. My wifi is working fine. Ive searched the net for a solution and tried the following:

    Disable firewall and anti virus
    Use a different usb port
    Download and install
    Download only
Download directly to desktop and install

None of the above has worked. I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas? iphone is not jailbroken if that makes any difference.

    Thanks.

I had a similar problem going back trying to update and it kept failing. I tried a faster internet instead of my own which was really slow and it worked a charm.

Since you said it took two hours to download i'm guessing it's a very slow internet connection. Try using someone else's internet if you can. It worked for me.

download that, when open up itunes click restore while holding down the shift button it will open up a navigation box. Navigate to the file you just downloaded and you should have no problem

btw, you don't always have to update just because apple says so. There are minor changes since 4.3.4

I had the same problem a while back. It was because I hadn't bothered updateing the actual iTunes to the latest version first. Make sure you're running the latest iTunes.

    Also had that problem.

Didn't bother doing anything about it, as anticipating the release of iOS 5 anyway.

If you use a router try bypassing that and connect via ethernet cable to your modem. I had awful trouble a while back trying to update my iPhone on 2 different computers in my house, eventually it worked when I connected directly to the modem.

I tried that and it wouldnt install for some reason.

Im pretty sure my itunes is up to date. I searched for a download and nothing came up.

Im about ready to give up on this update, especially if its minor but its bugging me!

But you'll want to get the issue sorted now. You don't want it happening while your trying to download iOS5 in the coming days/weeks.

Isn't there every chance this will coincide with a newer version of iTunes too?

Well yeah most likely there could be. But they might release iOS 5 ahead of it. I think the new iTunes will have iTunes Match support more than anything else. iCloud features are already available. But it will more than likely be released with a new version of iTunes.

But still the problem doesn't seem to be iTunes as it's up-to-date.

4.3.5 is just a small security update and can't be jailbroken easily.
    I'd just wait for ios5.

Finally got it to work! Thanks for all the help.

One more question: Whats the point in jailbreaking an iphone? I dont really know that much about it.

In short - jailbreaking lets you install apps that Apple won't allow.
It can also be used to unlock the phone to any network.
