Was down on an estate I have the stalking on outside Naas with my cousin this evening. We went down to prune some branches away from the high seats then sit up before dark.

On arrival in the yard we saw a stag crossing one of the stubbles, then another 2 as we were driving to one of the seats. Did our pruning and I went off to my seat. Was half dozing in the lashing rain when I heard the dog whimper at the foot of the ladder, here was a stag after hopping out of the wood and skipping across the stubble

I had the scope on him but it looked like he wasnt gonna stop so gave what I thought was my best impression of a sika whistle, he stopped for a second bout 140 yds out and 140gr of hornady's finest knocked him down like I'd flicked a switch !!

excuse the grainy photos, only had my phone

Had to drag it bout 600 yds across the tilled ground, I was some sweating heaving mess when I got to the road :D

Cousin got a nice pricket too both hanging in my fridge, back in the morning to stalk the other half of the estate.

Well done T, look like nice animals. Got one earlier over my side in Offaly. When I arrived there was some dick h*** on a scrambler tearing up and down ur side of the stream and then he shot across to the other side made lost of noise and appeared about 30 mins later at the gate into the land. He said he got lost. I said I seen exactly what he had done, he said 2 **** off" and drove off. Pri*k. Never came across him before or seen tracks of a scrambler:confused::mad::mad:

No I reckon he had been over your side for a while before I arrived, there was also a family walking back down the road on ur side so I'd asy everything was well spooked. Like you I dont see any decent heads down there, just the very odd pricket and less often again a second year buck. To be honest it was also a very wet evening and from my experience the Fallow tend to stay in the woods when its wet especially this time of year when there is still lots of food. Did not hear a single grunt of the rut, and was fully expecting to. Seems to be delayed everywhere..
Got a grand 8 pointer this evening in Wicklow from a high seat, but lost a decent 6/8 pointer a little earlier also. Droped in high heather and no way could I find him, lost my bearings once I came down, but to be honest I would have had to trip over him to find him where he fell the heather was that high. Am getting a deer dog, and not firing at anything in heather till then.:mad:

You'd be amazed at how quickly a deer can disapear and make itself invisible !! Stag I shot dropped in a slight rut left by tractor, cudnt see it until was about 30 yds away, but again the dog knew it was there before me  Y may bring the setter with you till ya get one
