Hello all I am 28 and well I always wanted to do a Carpentry and Joinery Course when I was 15 and I never did.

Now I would like to do it but do not think there are full time course to be a carpenter in ireland expect for Fas.

3 years ago i rang ever carpenter in Dublin and did not have any luck.

So what I am thinking is looking outside the box and doing a course in Scotland or Northern Ireland is it possible I do not know thats why I am posting this question here.

Is anyone else in the same boat as me ?

Is it definitely a carpentry and joinery course you are considering, or any wood related course.

Have you considered a college course such as Letterfrack college, for furniture design and manufacture.

In the current climate there are thousands of carpenter/joiners unemployed, so expecting a job at the end of it all, puts you at the back of the queue.
Behind me, and thousands like me. Even though I worked as a technical design manager in joinery, I,m still out of work unfortunately.

So specialising in a different area, may be the way to go. Maybe wood technology, unless you specifically want a hands on career.

Unless you can find an internship in someplace that is willing to train you in a wood related career. But from what I see the internships appear to be slave labour, on slave labour rates.

Letterfrack is pretty hard to get into unless you have good leaving cert points. as far as im aware there isnt an assessment anymore, however you may qualify as a mature student. there is a pretty good course in Lurgan should give the grounding if you want to move onto Letterfrack. dont know about Sligo It. Theres also a plc course in Cavan might be worth a look
