This bike seems very good value to me. I am thinking of buying it for my boyfriend and with a budget of 1000euro do you think it is a good deal? I know Ultegra is good and I can work out the size as I speak German so can call the company on Monday. Does anyone have any similar suggestions?

Ghost bikes have a decent reputation from what I've read, although as it's an aluminium frame from a German manufacturer I'd expect it to be quite stiff riding unless there is evidence to the contrary.

It's not got full Ultegra, just the shifters, mechs and cassette. The brakes are Tektro and the bb/chainset is FSA (as is the finishing kit).

The tyres are fast, light and grippy, if a little fragile.

The wheels are mid-range Shimano, €250 ish bought separately, very decent on a bike of this price.

I have a mostly irrational dislike of FSA componentry, but with those wheels the Ghost is a nice package.

An alternative at this price would be the Canyon Roadlite 6.0, with full 105 and Aksium wheels.

    .
Can't argue with irrational dislikes, but I've had good experience of FSA kit, but like all makers they have cheaper less good stuff and more expensive more gooder stuff.

True, he doesn't deserve me but such is my lot in life. He's a regular poster here so don't tell him! :D That Canyon is sold out though and I am not sure he'd like the colour. Are there any other cheapy online bike shops? I tried Chain Reaction, Wiggle, Ribble, Evans, Bike 24 and Winstanley. Is that it?

Pauls Cycles is one I've come across recently.

    CANNONDALE CAAD 8 105 COMPACT, £799.99

    Also Rose...

    RED ROSE Pro-SL 300

...and Pearsons used to have some real bargains this time of year.

"Thanks" to you too Murph. :) So, it's between the RED ROSE Pro-SL 300 2-speed, the Ghost
    and this Wilier La Triestina.
I don't know, so confused. He likes good wheels more than fancy gears I think...

    You're welcome ;)

What height & build is he ? There's only a few sizes left in the Rose.

Bike fit is more important than anything else, even fancy wheels.

You're taking a bit of a risk buying online without knowing what size & geometry suits himself the best. The great thing about buying local is that you can ( in most stores ), give him the pressie ( lucky git, all I get is friggin' clothes ), and then if it doesn't fit, go back to the bike shop and swap it for one that fits him.

Very costly to do that with a bike purchased online.

I am a bit worried about size yes but the value is so much better online. He is about 186cm with a 32inch inside leg. He rode a 58cm Trek 1.2 before it was stolen and he was very happy with that fit. I will be sure about the size before ordering for sure! He now has no bike after using it as a commuter and trainer and I can't be looking at him looking so low and dejected. Sometimes I think it's like a phantom limb. He goes out the back looking for his bike only to come back looking like an orphaned puppy when he remembers that it's gone. :o

Phantom limb? Orphaned puppy? He's good, I'll give him that. :pac:

    He's a friggin' legend ! :D

And to make your choice easier, the biggest Rose 300 available ( L ) is too small for him.

Check out the shipping costs on both as well.

I rode a 58cm Trek and fit well on that size from most other manufacturers, or 'large' from Giant and Planet X. 182cm 33.75" inside leg me. I would really reccomend the PX, if you really love someone you will get them carbon.

Not sure if this is within your budget, but plenty of people off this site have Planet X and swear by them. http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/YBPXSLPRIV/planet-x-pro-carbon-rival-road-bike

Oh, more confusion! Now you've set me looking at carbon bikes. I like this one and it is cheap till Tuesday. What do ye think? What would be the best size?
Unfortunately the Planet-X is over budget.

I'm going to get him the Focus 105 for E1088. Thing now is deciding on the size. L or XL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Murph100

Going by the Trek he had, the XL should be spot on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Focus Cayo is a very good deal at that price. Much better option than an alu bike. I had a 2008 Cayo in 58cm, fit was similar to my 58cm Trek.
