Hi, I was wondering does anybody know if there is an Atheist society in NUIM?
I wasn't at the Clubs and Society day last Wednesday... thanks :)

What would be the point of such a society? Maybe a humanist soc or something. But no there isn't. Come join the socialists, we're all atheists or agnostics generally ;)

We had our first meeting last Thursday, meeting this week on Egyptian Revolution, no time or date set yet but if you PM me your email address I'll stick you on the mailing list.

OP: There was the Skeptics Soc a few years ago, but they weren't really an atheist soc, just interested in skepticism. It didn't seem to be the most organised and fell through as a result.

The Christian Union with the Literary & Debating Society had the chair of Atheist Ireland for a debate 2 years ago which was well attended. This probably suggests that there would be a high demand for one.

Except that one can rather easily be an atheist or agnostic without being of necessity a socialist? As a result the socialists don't really fulfil the purpose that a secular humanist society would fulfil?

Also arguably socialism and atheism don't always make the best mix.

Not to mention that one could be a Christian and be a socialist, etc?

Yeah I was actually wondering if there was a humanist soc last night.
I think someone should definitely start one, it would provide a nice free ground
for discussion and non-dogmatic philosophy instead of always having to debate
or defend ones ideas with/against majority religious organisations.

Last one I remember was the 'pro-choice' society which formed in reaction to the pro-life hosting of youth defense a few years back

Does anyone remember the "scandal" from a few years back, when pro-lifers allegedly tore-down posters put up by pro-choicers? I think it was bigged up in that defunct student paper, the name of which I can't remember.
