"In accordance with the provisions of Section 997(3) TCA 1997, this statement is to be treated as a Notice of Assessment. If you wish to appeal any item not in accordance with your return, you must specify the matter in dispute and the grounds for the appeal, within 30 days of this notice. Please forward a cheque in settlement for €268"...

You are correct, put your PPS number on the back of the cheque together with the period you are paying, incase it gets seperated from the other documentation

it seems ridiculous, im trying to return my tax, and i find out that i owe them not they owe me

looks like there is something in your return which brought this matter to their attention.

Do as they say , and appeal the decision .

Next up , you need to ensure that you are claiming your maximum tax credits for the tax year specified .

now im totally confused, ive just rechecked my previous requests for the year 2008 which i asked a year ago, and there wasn't any statement saying i owe them  after a year they changed their mind?

It could be due to a late P35 return .-- Did you have more than one employer in 2008 and if so , were you a paye ( pay-as-you-earn ) employee ?

oh and i forgot to mention that this message ive received a 2 months ago, so the period of 30days already expired, and i havnt received any letter or any other corespondense from revenue, so i think this might be a mistake from revenue

If you only worked for one employer, I assume as PAYE why did you do a tax return.

Your assessment should have shown you how revenue calculated you liability, and then subtracted tax all ready paid on your behalf.

If there is a amount due then this may be for many reasons, your employer made a mistake, you made a mistake on your return or revenue made a mistake. If after going through all the figures you still think you are due a refund contact revenue.

I know many people do a tax return as they have heard from people who got refunds, but always remember it may work out the other way just as quickly.
