Volvo 340 1.6D

Despite this not being very desirable or falling into the vintage tax band, it is however very rare and very cheap, would be an interesting one to keep for a few years just for novelty/weirdness value and occasionally bring out to cause a little confusion to anyone who noticed it was a diesel. Most people don't even know there was a diesel option.

It's either going to end up with a welded diff or banger raced.

    My point exactly.

I think at least a few examples of all cars should be preserved.

    I agree completely

Given what classics I've owned I've always put my money where my mouth is in that regard.

The plain, staid boring classics are the ones which bring normal folk most enjoyment

    +1

No doubt because mass market = mass appeal, then when the market goes the appeal remains. Same with old computers! Anything that reminds people of their youth is 'in'!

I've had some cars that were awful when new and never had a problem selling them, Austin Maxi, Rover SD1 and the easiest sale was a Morris Marina.

Memories good or bad make them memorable

Agreed, iv never really had what would be called a 'cool' classic ('cept maybe for the 190E) but it's never bothered me. Someone will always have an interesting story relating to one of the cars, good or bad.

Has Conrad put his wedge where his knashers are?

These volvos are getting pretty scarce alright.

Aye they will, but they'll be rarer than they already are. There's still a lot out there. Sure some will come a cropper, but that's just natural shrinkage of the vehicle pool.

I applaud the individuals that do, but they're hardly queuing up to keep a few examples of a FSO Polonez (or are they:confused:)
    johnos1984 wrote: »

That's grand. I've heard over the years from various sources a lot of bleating about bangers/drifters/custom doing this that and the next thing, all without a penny on the table.

Now if you caught the extra ":D" on my Dolvo statement, I was just baiting VolvoMan a bit, to see if a Volvo was a Volvo if it wore the company's badge, or if there was a lower regard for the non-100% Swede.

Of course they're not a Volvo. Daf had the car developed before Volvo acquired them.

I never was much of a fan either.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

Sail rail from Dublin to Slough, collect car from friend who picked it up a few days before the trip. First drive of it down to Dover to get to Calais. Drove to Paris, then Pithiviers, back to Paris, down to Nevers, up to Brussells, onto Eindhoven, back to Antwerp, return to Eindhoven, down to Bonn, up to Hook of Holland, over to Harwich, up to Hitchin, across to Abingdon and back to Holyhead to catch the ferry back to Dublin.

Ended up with a roofbox and trailer by the end.
    6184680548_f106b3f1b0_z.jpg

Speedo cable fitted when I got to Paris. (supplied with car, but not fitted). Oil changed in Nevers and belts tensioned. Exhaust middle section replaced in Eindhoven (had to grind off the welds someone had done to keep the front and middle sections together for some reason). Carburettor changed for the right one in England. No breakdown cover taken out or needed.

And all done with the Mrs and 5 month-old nipper in tow. (and she's still talking to me too :D)

I really like that 340 ... impressive jaunt that too ... what plans if you don't mind me asking?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,957 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

Tony, the plan is to take the GS out of circulation for a bit to catch up on some bodywork. The 343DL above, will become car no1 for a bit. The 44 is still awaiting its front spring, but I've got that part now.

Anyway, I must pop out to the NCT as I've had a call to say everything is ready and I can come down to part with my 200 yoyos.

Cheers Richard ... that 343 is so tempting ... looks just like a 343 should to my eyes. I'm jealous

S40 Mk1 - More of a Volvo in my eyes than the 400 Series that went before it. It may have been based on a Mitsubishi, but nearly all the engines were Volvo.

S40 Mk2 - Did a lot of good for the image of the brand, particularly in this country. The floating centre stack was something genuinely cool at the time of its launch also.

I suppose it's the fact that it's one of the few remaining examples of a dying breed. It's an original Irish car that has survived over twenty years in a wasteful society like ours. That counts for something.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,957 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

Well the 343DL is a "Black Beauty" special edition. A handful of them are left, and it was saved from the crusher about 3 years ago, when it was purchased from a scrapyard. It's extra special because it's the only known RHD one around.

I do know of a couple of other RHD 340 diesels, but they're in Scotland and were exported from Ireland when new. I've only seen one red 340 round Dublin and a handful for sale in the past 4 years I've been here.
Has Conrad put his wedge where his knashers are?

I have to blame _Conrad_ for posting it in the other thread as I then HAD to go and see it AND buy the bloody thing. :D I've seen 300s in better condition for less, but as it's a RHD diesel, couldnae resist it. So you don't have to dread any more as this one won't be bangered or drifted.

im glad you bought the 340 that was in Offaly - i rang about that car, and was going to have a look, but then a 244 came up, which i now own.
as others have said, the fact that the 340 is an original irish car that has survived this long, is now deserving of an owner that will cherish, and not abuse it.
Btw, the black one looks very good, and the colour really suits it. Many miles of happiness to you.

Nice, i know the feeling, this has happened to me many times, buying cars that aren't exactly 'cool' or desirable to the masses but you have to have them all the same.
    Well done.

I saw your username up there first. I have to admit, I wasn't even looking for another car. Guess I'll have to look hard at the fleet and sell something else.

The black one looks better than it is, but knowing these Dolvos quite well, it's not beyond sorting out.

I do know of a couple of other RHD 340 diesels, but they're in Scotland and were exported from Ireland when new.

That is true. Apparently the UK never got a diesel model but we did.
I've only seen one red 340 round Dublin and a handful for sale in the past 4 years I've been here.

A few still exist in driveways of elderly people today. I also saw and posted recently about a tidy '79 343 I found down a laneway in Dublin 6.
So you don't have to dread any more as this one won't be bangered or drifted.

Once again, it really is great to see it ended up in safe hands.:)
