    Clutch perhaps?

Nothing to do with the clutch.

Could be many things but I'd start by checking / changing the spark plugs and then the plug leads. (I am assuming it's petrol).

Does it bring on the engine management light when it is acting up?

Don't know about You OP, but I've the 1.4 engine and it hesitates on acceleration under light loads usually between 1000- 2000 RPM. Funny think is that it only happens sometimes as opposed to all the time.

    So far I've :

    - Cleaned the Throttle Body

    - Full service, new plugs, oil ,filters etc.

    - New fuel filter(thought it might be blocked and needed doing anyway, 150,000 mls on the original)

And after all that it still remains, my last guess is HT Leads as one of the other posters mentioned. I'm currently waiting for them to be deivered.

Throttle body or EGR valve suspect. Check and see if they are any fault codes. Also the rocker cover seal can leak oil down around the plugs causing misfires.

You're on the ball ;),Forgot to mention I've that rocker cover leak you describe, it leaves a pool of oil in the area around the plugs over time. I clean it up every 2 weeks.I seem to think it's that because it goes away for a while after being cleaned and comes back when the oil builds up around the plugs. Definitly worth a look.
