Why is neither David McCullagh or DDP an 'editor'

I see that most of these RTE regional correspondents are 'editor' grade e.g. Jim Fahy and Pascal Sheehy are Western and Southern Editors respectively and the excellent David Murphy is Business Editor yet David McCullagh and David Davin-Power are both political 'correspondents'. Neither of then appears to be an editor yet I doubt if even his mother could claim that Pascal Sheehy does a better or more onerous job than either of them.

Let's face it, regional reporting in Ireland is pretty much a murder a week and the odd big factory closure when all the reporter has to do is churn out the same old clichés with just the name of the company changed - devastated community, big shock to the workforce, major employer in the area etc. etc. They don't have to do any analysis of the type that McCullagh and DDP have to do on the hoof and they're safely tucked up in bed with a cup of cocoa when their pre-recorded reports are aired while one of the lads is outside Leinster House doing a live link to Eileen Dunne on the news covering some breaking political story.

Anyone know why neither of the two pol corrs are editor grade? I suspect it's because they can only have one editor in each wing of the news department and since they can't both be editors, they are reluctant to promote one over the other.

There is a reason for this alright, I think it's because it's the only beat with two full correspondents as opposed to an editor and a reporter. Just one of the many internal quirks at the station!
