Well i sold my girlfriends car today,a punto year 2000,Im not from ireland,so i didn´t know how is done to change the ownership, the car is on my girlfriend name. The car was being sold for parts, but the guy got the logbook and i didn´t know i was suppose to take the his details, send by post to change the ownership of the car,to don´t have problems in the future; He gave me his number, his business card and just a "paper" saying that he bought the car, with date time, his name and price.I know that was stupid and i should keep the logbook to send and change ownership. He said to me he do that everyday buying cars this way,I thought was a little bit weird, because need change the ownership of the car.

My girlfriend can have problems in the future because didn´t change the ownership of the car? Should i contact him to take the logbook? Seems to be a dealer shop. And if he doesn´t want to give the logbook to change the ownership, should go to garda or tax road office to see what i can do? Or this way she won´t have problem?

If anyone could help,I will appreciate.

Sorry about my english,it´s not perfect.

Contact the buyer first and try and sort it out, you will probably get a good idea if he has scammed you by what he has to say.

Otherwise you need to go into the Guards and inform them.

Well you never know what he could do with car. He can actualy start driving it. And if he gona crash on something or somebody, Garda will be after your girlfriend.
I had a similar situation, Sold a car and they just drove off with logbook in a car. So i went to the garda. They sent me to Tax office. So i filled in Declaration form + Explanation, and i had to get signature From solicitor (lawyer).
Atleast worked for me. I had to pay few penalty what they managed to make - speeding + no tax disc displayed.

I will give a call on monday to see what he has to say or maybe i will go straight to the adress from the card,it´s not too far from my home.

And if he doesn´t want to give the details or the logbook what the garda can do?

I wouldnt call what happened a scam. TBH, If the guy was buying the car to try to sell on, he was always going to take the logbook with him if allowed to do so. It was up to you to handle the book properly.

Moral of the story, never ever give the buyer the log book.

Well it wasn´t really a scam,it was my mistake to hand the book to him.

Definitely not a scam. Happens every day when the old owners don't know they're supposed to send the VLC themselves.

    Wait a second.
You said you have a paper stating he bought a car with date, his name, and car details.
    Is his signature on it.
If so, I believe that's a document to prove that car belongs to him now.
Send a copy of this to department of transport with letter explaining what happened.

PS. If someone is selling a car for export, you have to give a buyer a registration cert.
I know this one wasn't for export, but everyone seems to say "never ever give out reg cert" while in some cases you don't have a choice.
