Since he was close I decided to go for this option. So, went to his FB site to check the opening hours:

    Mon - Wed: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
    Thu: 10:00 am - 7:00 pm
    Fri - Sat: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

I turned up yesterday at ten to six with my amp. Closed. Nice.

So, I thought, surely the 7pm closing time will be better for me, no need to rush after work. I just rang them at five to six. No answer. Nice.

So, seeing as this shop does not need my money, could anyone recommend another shop that is close to town? I live in Dublin 2.

    Thanks.

I would really recommend Mark in Alladins Amps especially for a VOX AC30 the guy really knows his stuff. He will give you a free estimate if you want as well.

So, decided to give this place another go, knowing that such an astute businessman as the one who runs the aptly named 'Some Neck' guitars would surely decide to open on a busy saturday. I arrived, again with amp and money, to find the shop fully open within operating hours (gasp). Unfortunately, the owner decided that since I 'badmouthed' him on boards (his word for constructive criticism, I supoose), he would not take my business, and sent me packing.

In summary, I cannot say I would recommend the aptly named 'Some Neck' guitars to boards members.

I will give this guy a try, I guess.

I´ve found the guy who runs SomeNeckGuitars to be pretty pleasant actually. Never bought there but he was very friendly when I just walked in for a chat.

It´s hardly ideal to criticise someone on a public forum and then go back as if nothing happened. There´s always going to be a personal element to every small business, despite sincere attempts to be professional. Maybe it wasn´t the best reaction either but that´s life.

Also, re-tubing should be a pretty easy job if you buy the right tubes. You hardly need to bring it to a technician for that.

Wow. Of course, that's only 1 side of the story but that's a pretty bad impression to be giving to a customer.

No, it wasn't the best reaction, and he is running a business. If this was a more professional business and someone publicly complained that the shop closed before the stated hour or didn't answer the phone, then you would expect a more apologetic response. That's how you run a professional business. It's not like I called him names (something I pointed out to him) I simply voiced my frustration in public.

I honestly swear that it is all true. I was fairly annoyed, and was tempted to launch a tirade against him, but now that I am calmer, I am glad I chose to stick to the truth.

I am also considering that now. Mine is a 1970s VOX AC30, do you know any good sites that provide guides/details? I have been trying to gain access to the tubes themselves, but it's fairly tricky and I am worried about breaking something.

He's clearly some rich kid that don't actually need the business! Lot's of places in Dublin that do want the business so I know where I will not go in the future.
    Bad form.

So, I managed to finally gain access to the valves, and yes indeed it is quite easy to change them, isn't it? Quite glad things worked out the way they did now.

Anywho, is there a way of knowing just which valves are gone? I have a couple of Mullard el84's in there, which are fairly pricey (and great) it seems, so I am wondering whether they still work or not.

Also, does anyone know where Mullard el84's can be bought within the UK & Ireland?
