Just wondering , do folk here normally plan the races at the start when drawing up a training program ? if you decide to add a race when the program has started , how do you adjust the program ? Do you try and get all the quality sessions in that week on top of the race , or replace a quality session with the race ? if the race is replacing a session what session is it ? If you include the race with all quality sessions in the week , is this a risk in terms of injury/near future quality sessions ?

    Depends on the race.

If it is a race I am looking to do well in what I do is substitute one quality session for the race. You will recieve as much if not more benefit from a race but also must address the recovery. If your body is used to 2 sessions a week dont increase by adding another hard day.

If it is a low key race and you want to get two sessions in a week then make sure the second one is a light one. I usually aim for form work on the week of a race (long recoveries at higher speeds for short durations). Would try to avoid Tempo's and that also
