After the high of the Swords sportive came the low of crashing on Tuesday on one of the same descents we went through last Sunday (Saddlestown?)
It's a fast twisty descent coming from Bellewstown direction heading towards the Naul.
I was descending around a tight bend and approaching a crossroads ( I had right of way)
There was a jeep at the junction to my left which started to slowly move across the road as I approaced the junction.
I just had time to shout “What the eff are you doing?? “ and swerve behind him.
Then I saw it.....the tow rope.
I braked hard and unclipped my left foot just before the impact sent me flying.
I hit the road grazing the left knee and elbow and (as it turns out) breaking my left wrist.
The guy who was being towed appeared and asked me was I alright.
Meanwhile the guy who had pulled out in front of me shouted out the window (several times) “What the eff were you doing?”
I told driver No 2 to tell driver No 1 to shut up and to shut up now which he did.
I rang my brother in law who had trouble finding me but picked me up about 30 mins later and brought me to A&E in Drogheda.
The other two had just said “Ah you're grand, good man etc” and fecked off.
I was too shaken to really notice or care that much but I did get their reg plates.
The x-ray in Drogheda showed a badly broken wrist needing surgery so they put a backslab of plaster on it and told me to report back at 7am on Wednesday morning for the surgery.
I was put on a trolley in A&E Wednesday morning and there I stayed until yesterday morning when I had the surgery (screws, wires, full cast) and got sent home about 7.00pm
The good news is that the bike is undamaged apart from a small scuff on the brake lever.
So thats it, wrist in plaster for 6 weeks or so then the recovery starts.
Supposed to be in Manchester today for the Utd game and a Wilko Johnson gig.....:(:(

Jeez furiousox, that's nasty. Hopefully you'll fully recover and be back at Old Trafford on the bike soon. I broke he left wrist last year, nothing near as bad, and managed to get on the turbo within a week and was back on the bike after 6 weeks

Off with you to the gardai and report the accident and the fact that it was a personal injury accident. Make sure they follow up to get insurance details of the drivers concerned.

Broke my scafoid early 90's had to get a bone graft and screws, was out of work for 3 months. Healed grand no issues 20+ years later.

    Good luck with the recovery.

ah the infamous Gilson's cross strikes again, sorry to here about your fall sounds like it could have been a lot worst, hope you have reported the incident to the Garda pretty shoddy behaviour by both drivers to leave you by the side of the road like that, im sure the Garda would be interested in having a word with both gentlemen about leaving the scene
i was taken away from that cross in an ambulance a few years ago thankfully nothing broken in my case, get well soon

Ooops furiousox, it will seem like little comfort, but it could have been worse, and it could be the start of the (alleged)Summer rather than the end, and sure hopefully you're right-handed! :)

I'm left handed and this was the second time I had broken that wrist.

The paperwork was a bit of a nuisance.

Jebus!!!! That's shocking stuff! I hope you've reported it as that's piss-poor behaviour from those drivers.
Best of luck with the recovery.

    and sure hopefully you're right-handed! :)
If there's a Mrs furiousox in the picture then surely it shouldn't matter

Seriously, hope you have a speedy recovery. Very poor form from the drivers. Hope you have a witness to back you up.

Not so seriously, did you type out that post single handedly? No need to reply if it hurts to do so ;)

    Thanks all, yup typing one-handed!
Mrs ox has already suggested I consider taking up stamp collecting as an alternative pastime to cycling!
    Gilsons cross eh?
At least I know now what it's called, is it in Co Meath or Co Dublin?
I went to Drogheda garda stn on Tuesday to report it but they said I needed to go to a station in Meath.
Thanks again for all the comments.

go to the gardai, report it, get a solicitor and sue him. what a nightmare, get well soon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 portron niner

I reckon you could try reporting it to Traffic Watch. At the very least, they'd pass the details to the relevant station who would likely take it more seriously when they needed a statement from you.

Scumlords just driving off like that on you.

Hate those f****** who keep edging out so you have no idea what they are going to do next.

Anyway you probable need a dose of Wilko Johnson (age 64.)
Wilko seems to undecided whether to move out or reverse in this clip. :)

    Unlucky, get well soon.

I really hate that junction. Some of the lads in the club fly through it. It's fast and it's not the safest.

Very sorry to hear about your accident Furiousox, hopefully u make a speedy recovery.

Get on the turbo trainer as soon as u can to keep up the level of fitness you've already built up.

I regularly go through that crossroads on my way up snowtown and i'm always a bit weary about it even though i've right of way, think i'll slow down a bit from now on.

Cheers all, one consolation I can take is that it was better for me (and the bike) to hit the tow rope rather than one of the vehicles.

Only on a cycling forum would people (incl. the OP) be worried about the health of the bike. :pac:

    Good luck with the recovery.

Hope you make a quick recovery, Mr. Ox. You had every right to be furious.

I have been through that junction travelling the Naul-Bellewstown Road umpteen times and I never realised that I had the right of way. Probably just as well!

Out of curiosity are you going to take it any further with the guy in the car? He doesn't sound like a guy who was desperately sorry for his carelessness.

I went through it at speed heading for the Naul a couple of months ago for the first time. There was a lot more vegetation than Google Street View has, and it wasn't until I was clearing the junction that I questioned if I had right-of-way :o

    Speedy recovery, furiousox!

I've reported it to the Guards so they might give him a call.
I've no intention of taking it any further at the moment.
If the bike was damaged/written off or I was unable to work I'd be looking for appropriate compensation.
Fortunately the bike is ok and I'll be back at work on Wednesday.

Sorry to hear of your mishap and speedy recovery furiousox . Just to fill you in on my story.
7 weeks back my better half and myself were riding in a bunch (about 16). She was on a hybrid riding along side me and her handlebars(straight) jammed between my brake lever and handlebar(perfect fit ) at about 28km/hr. You can imagine the rest. After pulling half the bunch off our bodies/bikes, discovered she broke her wrist and I broke 2 ribs (and my helmet) Quite scary when you try to disentangle only to discover that both bars locked tightly together. I have been in many situations where I bumped bars/shoulders/bodies etc but this was different. Bikes ok apart from one spoke in my front wheel. Surgery in Drogheda and happy to say she got her cast off last week and stitches out tomorrow. Ribs kept me off bike for 3 weeks but nearly there. A bitch when you sneeze cough or laugh. Moral of the story don't ride a hybrid in a bunch. Wife will be getting proper drops for future spins or she ain't coming out with me again. Easy knowing she is not a Boards member :pac: ( I hope)

@ Furiousox, sorry to hear off your injury, get well soon. Also slighty connected,I saw Wilco live a few years back, where he joined the Blockheads for 2 songs. He had the same "intense" expression as he has on that video posted, very edgey, and I wouldnt have been surprised if he had jumped into the crowd around me and murdered half of us!! LOL

They played same footage from that Dr Feelgood Old Grey Whistle test appearance on Jools Holland the other night. Wico was playing live in the studio with some Blockheads and boy can he still strut his stuff. One of the greats. Sorry for hijacking your post furiousox but love this music.

I think the moral of the story here is to ride the wife, not with the wife!!:D

On a more serious, less crude note - I hope both you and the missus are both better and that the OP makes a speedy recovery.

Hopefully the Guards will do the driver for leaving the scene of an accident.

Who's paying for all the medical expenses, surgery, time off work, physio and recovery? Why not get the inconsiderate and careless driver to pay for that and maybe in future he'll be more careful pulling out in front of cyclists and then leaving the scene.
The wrist is a delicate joint and although should heal you might be somewhat weak for a number of months. If you play other sports or take them up in future a good functioning wrist is crucial for such sports as golf. Important to get everything sorted out now to avoid complications later in life.

Furiousox I took a tumble at the weeken as well and broke my arm just below the shoulder.Sling on for 6 to 8 weeks. What are you intending to do in the short term to try and keep some fitness? I am reluctant to grt up on the tubo for a few weeks as if my bones move at all I will have to get surgery. Focus will be on long walks for first two weeks I think

I broke the same bone as you about 3 years ago, much worse than breaking the wrist (sorry!)
Take it very easy, it's an awkward break. I was always paranoid about damaging it further.

+1, I also did my humerus in 2009, though the break in mine was closer to the elbow. I didn't have access to a turbo either time, but based on my experiences of other things with both, I don't think I could even have set up a turbo with the humerus fracture, whereas I would have had little issue with the wrist. It's also a lot easier to brace or mind the wrist fracture than a humeral fracture, as well as the former being (in my completely non medical opinion) more stable unless every supporting bone was broken.

Midonogh, this is not meant as medical advice, but based on what happened to me, I would suggest that you ask your doctors if there is anything you should be doing to prevent stiffness in the elbow joint, as it was only said to me after about 5 weeks that I should have been exercising the joint with my other arm, by which time I had developed a bit of a muscle contracture and my elbow would not straighten beyond about a 90-100 degree angle. It is possible that this will be a side effect of the treatment (every break is different, and yours may need to be more stationary), and it is rectifiable with therapy as was the case with me, but it was something I would have liked to avoid if given the choice!

    @furiousox
    @cython

gents your advice while depressing is very much appreciated. Maybe I will leave the turbo until week 5. Cython the elbow stretch was pointed out to me by the doctor but based upon your advice I will be making sure that I apply it diligently.
    Cheers
    Michael
