It's a VAG 1.9 TDi so belt driven and needs changing every 60k miles afaik. Zafira has a 2.0Di engine afaik, which is a GM unit, not a very refined engine but will probably do what it says on the tin.

If you are looking at Passats and Mondeos then I suggest looking at the Peugeot 406 and Citroen C5. The 2.0 HDi engine is way smoother than the others and proving to be just as reliable. The 406 being probably one of the best cars of the late 1990s/early 2000s.

is the C5 reliable? dont know much about them but always hear people giving out about citroens having elec problems......would be interested in an estate version of one. got them as taxis before and seemed like a smooth ride

budget is about 1700e it bein a recession and all. id like an mpv or an estate to kip in the back of on fishing trips and to fit the gear into too. open to most models once theyre reliable enough. needs to be diesel as will be doing alot of driving when placement starts for college.

You're looking for a reliable diesel car, in 'good' condition, yet have a budget of only €1,700?
    Best of luck.

(Do your sums w.r.t. Motor tax and look at some petrol alternatives)

made that mistake about 6 months ago gettin rid of my passat 1.9 diesel. did all sums including tax and thought i did the right thing changing to 1.4 petrol. oh how i was wrong. and 1700e is plenty to get a decent diesel. just looking for peoples advice on cars not to snoot at my budget
