Need to bodge up a rope gasket

The muffler on my old lawn-boy mower had to come off for a cleanout but the old rope gasket was in bits and caked in gunk. Any suggestions as to how I can make up a replacement. Would the replacement go on fire even? I have an old bootlace that goes right around the muffler and fits right into the groove. Any suggestions?

Oven door glass rope - it's heat resistant.

theres rope you can get for boiler flues (I think) in different sizes, try heatmerchants or the like
