    Saw this on another site:

    how-to-annoy-the-employees-of-facebook-17669-1317194386-56.jpg

It's quite obviously only applicable to UK residents, but do we have a similar law?

I'd love to see what they have on me, and I'm sure many others would too.

Yes, we have a Data Protection Act too.

    You would say -

    Dear ...
I wish to make an access request under the Data Protection Acts 1988 and 2003 for a copy of any information you keep about me, on computer or in manual form. I am making this request under section 4 of the Data Protection Acts.

Or just close your account - request it when you send the data request.

You don't have to use it!

That report is misleading and fails what it defines by leaks. When you use an app you authorise it and give it permissions to access part of your profile required to allow the user experience. Very easy to get any persons users ID but it's worthless. There's nothing particularly sinister about this at all.

    What is?

Actually I think one of the big problems of the "Facebook generation" is they don't look after their own privacy well enough. You can complain about big corporations but many people have their whole lives publicly accessible and there's no need for Facebook or their advertisers to go prying. Anybody can get it!

They should perhaps start teaching online privacy as part of the school curriculum.

There's a function in FB settings on the general page to download all the data which you've uploaded to FB - here's the info:

    Download your information
Get a copy of what you've shared on Facebook.

Easily download and browse through a personal archive of your Facebook photos, posts and messages. Learn more about downloading a copy of your information.
We're generating your personal archive. We'll email you when it's ready.
    What's in your archive?

Any photos or videos you've shared on Facebook
Your Wall posts, messages and chat conversations
Your friends' names and some of their email addresses

(Note: We'll only include email addresses for friends who've allowed this in their account settings.)
    What's not in your archive?

Your friends' photos and status updates
    Other people's personal info
Comments you've made on other people's posts

    Caution: Protect your archive
Your Facebook archive includes sensitive info like your private Wall posts, photos and profile information. Please keep this in mind before storing, sending or uploading your archive to any other site or service.

That's not quite the same as getting all data that they have on you.
Facebook also contains data about you that others have added (tagged pics, etc.) as well as browsing habits (i.e. visiting other websites) that they have collected on you.
I'd say that what a person has added themselves is only half of what Facebook hold!

And so he should, the Facebook model of how the Internet should work commercially is quite a shift. There should always be a watchful eye over it.

Plenty of other sites use tracking cookies etc. that already collects this info. All of this info on you is in "separate unlinked containers". The difference with Facebook is because it's a real name environment is that they now able to link these containers together.

I know that but if you were to contact FB with an access request, they would have to provide this info to you. This info is critical to their advertising model and has a value to them and differs from many of the tracking cookie sites as now they can link your browsing habits with your friends, etc.
