How annoying must this get...

Was beside this Golf in Dublin - Red with black bonnet, R32 exhaust, but diesel I guess with the smoke that was coming out of the exhaust - As you can hear it was making some sort of coo-ing sound - it was annoying me and I was only beside it for a few minutes - I don't know how the owner lives with it

Any idea what mod it is?

Im only guessing it was a diesel - as any time he put down the boot there was a puff of blue smoke out the back

chatterbox/flutter sounds cool but is actually killing your turbo is it not? air coming back ways through the blades as they're spinning.bad for bearings.

if you look up some of my previous posts in the mod cars section, you'll find a thread of mine. I was looking at a '02 WRX with 1.2 bar turbo and "polar" ECU (i never found out what that was:D) and instead of a dump-valve it had a chatterbox mod. I had my reservations about it at the time because of the amount of pressure I could feel going through the car everytime the gear was changed (up or down).

so a catterbox is a seperate mod? what does this intale then? would they ruin bearings and damage hoses and so on if the excess built up pressure isn't being blown off?

im not going to lie, I know very little about the chatterboxes installation, but from what I felt in the scooby, I'd say long term the car is gonna be in the ****!

He did, he didnt really seem to know where he was going as i was behind him for a while after that and he was indicating one way then turning the other way etc.

He certainly was turning heads ....just not in a good way. I was going to check under my own bonnet at one stage to see if there were some birds nesting

Thats the funniest sounding car i've ever heard. It reminds me of the dog in snatch (or was it lock stock), that swallowed the toy.:D

Its also a bit camp in fairness, everytime you change gear your car goes ooooooooh..

It sounds like a car that has a petrol-only dumpvalve/BOV put on a diesel car, with noisemaker on the exit vent.
Dumb thing to do, as it leaks boost when the ECU is requesting it.

It works on a petrol car when the throttle closes on lifting off the accelerator, causes a spike in pressure between the turbo and throttle which is vented by the BOV. Diesels don't have the throttle closure to cause the pressure spike, they only spike in pressure because of spooling up.

BOV on a diesel will cause poor running under acceleration, poorer fuel economy and less power, due to less air delivery to the cylinders than the MAF has indicated to the ECU. No win there at all.

Most turbos have a recirculation valve, dumps the excess pressure back into the air intake to be boosted up again. Dumpvavles don't put the excess back into the air feed they just dump it back out into the atmosphere. The way the air is dumped out creates the noise. This only happens when you come off the throttle, think it's too stop the turbo from killing itself from back pressure.

I have one on my Evo, it's not that loud and you wouldn't notice the noise. HKS I think it is, came with the car. I had a GSR with the recirculation valve, different cars I know , but never noticed a gain in preformance.

My Golf does it when it's started from really cold, if I change gear around 2k rpm it kinda booo's like that.
