Songs in Cartoons

Can someone tell me why they have them? For every "see my vest" there must be 30 clunkers. They're not funny, and a lot of the time (see American Dad) they can't really sing. Comedy is hard to do, but virtually impossible in song. Who enjoys these songs? ...or is it that the makers secretly want to be on broadway and not animation?

What's the last song in an animation that you enjoyed?

The moment I hear a cartoon song start I cringe and change the channel. The Simpsons used to have some great songs when they kept them to the minimum, but now they're awful. None of McFarlane's shows ever had any good songs. Southpark also had a couple of good ones, like too many minorities.

Although the audience is particular for that. ;)

South Park hasn't done a bad song that I can think of. Gay Fish was a great pay off to the Fishsticks episode. They're not always funny but they are enjoyable for me.

The Simpsons used to be that way aswell. I wouldn't trade away Fry's opera from Futurama to be rid of the crappy songs.

I'm struggling to think of cartoons with comedy songs without going back to Spongebob and Animaniacs. :p

McFarlane loves showtunes way too much to be heterosexual.

I can honestly say I never liked a "cartoon song".

South Park and Simpson's(old episodes) do them well

Family Guy and American Dad songs are not funny in the slightest, I think McFarlane fancies himself as a bit of a singer, hence the inclusion.

As others have said, Seth MacFarlane is obsessed with musicals and the sound of his own voice. As long as his programmes dominate prime time animation then you're gonna see a lot of them.

I've actually enjoyed some of family guy's songs. Road to Rhode Island, Don't do toad song, the classic one where Brian sings to the elderly woman (I think that won an award). Hell I even kind of enjoyed Shipoopi (sp?). The Frank Sinatra Jr.s stuff ain't bad either.

As for the Simpsons I really really hated that all singing episode but most of the clips were enjoyable songs(Monorail, StoneCutters, GarbageMan KwikiMart etc.)

I will say that when they are done poorly though it's horrible.

Man, the song in the new South Park is AMAZING!
    # All week long, Boss-man say, #
    # Work, Mexican work! #
    # Sing your song, earn your pay #
    # Work, Mexican work! #

    ...

    Hrm. :p

ha ha ha, came in to post this! SP know how to make songs - short, simple, catchy and almost a parody of a song, rather than a "legit" song. Perfect. And amazing. I bloody love this song. It's stuck in my head
WORK! Mexican.....WORK! Mexican.... WORK! Mexican, it's your lot in life!

    God, so funny :p

You do a disservice to Trey Parker's longer songs, Doctor Jayk. ;)

One of the songs in South Park: The Movie (Blame Canada) was nominated for an Oscar.

Futurama also has some good few songs in it...

Family guy does have a few funny songs. Unfortunately the bad ones seem to go on for ages.
    This is my favourite
