Transferring files/folders from one external HD to another

Hopefully someone can help me out there. One of my external drives has gone a bit ''Pete Tong'' and I am in the process of transferring all the files and folders off it onto another HD. The process was going okay (if a little time consuming) Large files and a lot of them; music and movies. However, the speed at which the files are copying over has slowed down a lot since last evening. For instance, a 60 mb folder has just taken 7 minutes to transfer. Hate to think how long some of the movies might take. Anyone have any clues why the slowdown might have happened and is there a remedy for it. Thanks. I'm running an iMac 10.6.8.

If your hard drive is in fact dying then it might take longer for the files to be read from it, depending on what kind of error correction there is. As well, it'll take longer to copy a huge group of smaller files than a large file of the same size.

I'm not sure what much you can do, apart from just letting it run and hoping for the best. :)

It reads a sector, sees an incorrect checksum and reads it again. Repeats ad infinitum until it gets a read with a correct checksum or gives up. Dependent on the copying software, it may not know when to give up. Also, if you really want to save everything, you won't want it to give up.
