Streaming problem (I think...)

    Hi,

Media streaming is something I'm not terribly familiar with, so please bear with me while I try to describe my problem.....

Have a very simple set-up at home (don't laugh all you experts.....). Sony Bluray player (BDP-S373) with a wired connection to my router, a Linksys e4200. This has had some well documented issues with its media server (Twonky), but the latest firmware seems to have fixed most of the problems, or so the forums would have me believe.

I have a bog standard 1TB WD hard disk attached to the Linksys.

Problem is that some media I can play through the USB port (just on a stick) on the front of the BD player isn't recognised when I try to use the Linksys to feed it to the player. Typically HD .mkv files will play no prob from the USB, however when I try via the Linksys on the player, it shows no files available. This is also the case for .mp4 videos. Bog standard .avi files / divx etc play fine.

So, when is a media server not a media server?. The player can play the files, so why would the server take it upon itself to decide my player can't play them?.

I'm probably being terribly stupid about this, but any advice would be appreciated. Additionally, I'm not adverse to the idea of replacing the thing with a dedicated media player of some sort, any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks!!

Seems to be a known issue: link

Try updating the firmware on the Linksys.

Also note that many DLNA clients and servers don't support MKV anyway. Does your Linksys or Sony support any other type of share (ie SMB)?

Thanks I have updated the firmware already.

I guess my question relates to your last point. If the job of the thing is to serve media, why would it try to decide what can or cannot be played?.

Am I just asking too much?.

Am considering a Boxee, which seems to be the dogs when it comes to such things.....

Its just the way it goes, media streaming (via UPNP/DLNA) can be very limited depending on the server and client.

Most people streaming media to a HTPC or media player just use regular file shares like SMB or NFS.

Ive heard a lot of people complaining of problems with the Boxee box recently, especially audio dropouts and network issues. A lot of early adopters are jumping ship.

Bought a Boxee yesterday. Very very impressed by it. Its a little noisier than I'd like when just browsing content, but when playing you don't notice it.

Also got a cheap UK VPN, so have access to BBC iPlayer and loads of other content - its rather mind blowing the amount of stuff you can get (albeit at SD, HD seems to be a bit too challenging despite the fact I have 100meg UPC). It has identified some of my local files incorrectly however, so needs a bit of tidying up, but overall very pleased.

This affected me, I started getting smb disconnects since the 1.2 firmware in June, but yesterdays RC Firmware 1.2.1.20426 has fixed it.

I have a file I've submitted to the bug tracker as it buffers every few minutes, it could be the file, everything else plays perfect
