Does anybody know where I can buy an American Football helmet for a 9 year old? Tried online but all appears to be US based.
    thanks :)

No idea. Why do you need a helmet for a 9 year old ? You cannot play contact football in this country at that age.

He wont wear a bicycle helmet. Because none of the kids on the road do. He loves this old US footie helmet that his older brother gave him. He'll wear it all the time. Whatever works. I'm looking for something with a strap that will fit him. So basically its about aesthetics. And safety.

Seems like a lot of money to waste if you can't use it. But here is the Schutt fitting guide

    Size Head Size Head Circumference
    Small 6-6 1/2 19-20 1/2"
    Medium 6 1/2-7 20 1/2-22"
    Large 7-7 1/8 22-23 1/2"
    X-Large 7 1/2 -8 23 1/2-25"

Honestly the last thing I would put on my childs head if I had one for riding a bike would be an American Football helmet. Only because his vision will be very limited. He will have a fair few blind spots and turning the head to look left or right wont be as easy. I would suggest mirrors on his bike to compensate to be honest.

Also from experience those helmet for long periods requires proper stretching exercises on the neck to stop it going stiff and sore.

Hope it works out for you though. Those 2 websites i put in my last post I can recommend.

thats absolutly and utterly unsafe to attempt to do. Honestly Im not having a go but hes a freaking 9 year old.

He wears a bike helmet becasue you tell him to not becasue he wants to or becasue other kids on the road do.

I'd imagine there are all sorts of specifications and standards that differ between a cycling helmet and an AF helmet - I severely doubt it's a case of "ah sure they both protect your head". Anything other than a specified cycling helmet could be putting his safety at risk.

I just noticed this also. American Football helmets the strap used to keep it on the head is a separate piece from the helmet all together. Its known as a chinstrap and between that and the helmet being the right size it should stay on your head but only in American Football. As the helmets are designed for Football and not riding a bike I wouldn't trust the chin strap if my child was jolted or thrown off the bike.

Many cases in the Pee Wee, High School, College and Pro football where guys had helmets torn off their head quite easily. Food for thought.

As someone who deals with these helmets on a daily bases I would ask you do some proper research before wasting your money on a helmet that might not be suitable for riding a bike.

Many thanks for the feedback guys (esp. t.outlaws). I'm fully aware its not the same spec but its better than NOTHING. Yes he's a 9-year old but you'd be surprised at the level of resistance when NOBODY else wears one. I'm happy to pay if he'll wear one. Eventually, I hope to move over to a proper cycling helmet.

    Up the Steelers!

Its not better than nothing it may be even more dangerous nobody knows becaue it isnt tested for that use.

You dont parent based on what other people do you parent based on what you should do.

Seriously you need to tell him he wears the helmet or his bike is being taken off him.

Myth: A football helmet will work just as well as a bicycle helmet.

Fact: Only a bicycle helmet is made specifically to protect the head from any fall that may occur while biking. Other helmets or hard hats are made to protect the head from other types of injury. Never allow your child to wear another type of helmet when riding a bike.

Why not purchase an american football bike helmet ? Its a bike helmet with the logo of your favourite team on it wouldnt that be the best solution. I have seen MLB Red Sox helmets for kids so Im assuming there would be NFl ones ?
