    hi folks,
apologies if i have the wrong forum here, not too sure where to post my query.
i am in the market for a 08 car. i have a bit of money to spend and i think its between a passat or a qashqai, maybe a ford mondeo.
bmw, audi, toyota are not on my agenda at all.

my query is this, i know lots of people driving passats with little people complaining about them. I am wondering what is the best model\engine out there for the passat. basically what is the most reliable one i can get.
My next query is about the nissan qashqai. for some reason i really like it but i dont know much about them. Are there any known issues with them? are they easy to self-service and are the parts expensive?

anyone with an opinion is more than welcome to reply.

For the most reliable Passat diesel engine you would be looking at the old but dependable 1.9 TDI. Stay away from the earlier 2.0 TDI's as these give big engine trouble. You might get the newer CR 2.0 diesel engine for your budget and haven't heard anything serious about them reliability wise. I think they came in in late '08.

The older 1.9 isn't the most refined engine but it's reliable so it's really up to what you prioritise...

As for the Nissan all I know is that the 1.5 DCI engine is shared with Renault and I have heard some good some bad stories about it Others on the forum will be able to tell you more about it I reckon.

    I don't get it?

There is no need to be condescending just because I have done the Leaving Cert this year. My post was written trying to be helpful to the OP. What I wrote is what I know.

I have an 08 2.0 diesel - steer clear unless your doing big milage. Major engine problems if your only trotting around the town. I say that having spent €2.5K on a 1 mth out of warranty one so hence not a happy bunny.

The passat is a far more substantial car than the squashqai. Although a passat fuel pump shat itself on me up north a few years back so don't expect exemplary reliability from even the 1.9

After sitting in both I can safely say that the cashcow was a bit cramped (maybe I couldnt work the seats and I'm tall) but thats just my opinion. I got driving an 08 2.0 TDI passat and can say it wasnt too bad atall. 6 speed box too as opposed to the 5 speed in the cashcow. The cashcow will be a good bit cheaper to buy and run than the passat and I think is a bit bigger all round. Both have their good points

I don't bother with newish cars but I'd take the passat

Yeah but I didn't even get it. Why not try to write a helpful post that could be of benefit to the OP instead of needless comments.

I'm all for 'forum banter' too but not condescending remarks thanks.

    Anyway.. moving on.. :)
