Hey all. New to cars and don't have too much of a clue. I'm in my twenties but just starting to drive. I'm looking for something that would be cheap enough to run, so diesel and I'm not sure at all what would be a good car starting out. I know I don't want a bucket of crap, I'm not 17. A nice eno0ugh cheap car I guess. Any ideas?

On a learners. I'm keeping the budget low enough. A grand or so. I'd go to 2 probably for something I would like.

To be honest any diesel you buy for 1-2k is more than likely to have many things that go wrong unless you go for something like a VW SDI that run forever. Also you won't find many small engined diesels for that budget so tax would be in excess of 450-500 quid a year.

Better to go with a small 1.0-1.2 small petrol car with lower tax and insurance and most likely less to go wrong.. Unless your mileage warrants a diesel I wouldn't bother.

2K will buy a much nicer petrol car than the equivalent diesel.

If you want a diesel, keep an eye out for Skoda Fabia's from 2000 onwards with the SDI enginne. 1.9 so it's 660~ a year to tax, but okay to insure.

I'd advise getting a polo, since I started with one myself and can speak from experience. One with a 999cc engine costs 172 a year to tax and are quite cheap to insure, plus if you get a hatchback, are really handy for doing your test as you have to do a reverse around a corner and the turnabout. It has a very good field of vision and the 3 door is very comfortable to drive.

You can pick them up for around 500euro, and I've seen cheaper, with NCT and a bit of tax.

    Hope that helps!

At the end of the day youre trying to get started with desirable 2nd hand cars that are dirt cheap. There hardly going to be exciting or great but will get you about and you can work your way up to something better when you want.

Personally I'm petrol only but if I was to choose any of the cars above I'd pick the 406

Having read you post line by line again, you should really get a small petrol. Diesels are expensive to run if something goes wrong in them and they carry a premium because of the misconception that fuel is the only cost you put into a car, which it by all means isn't.

I would suggest you get a small petrol to start off with. You won't be doing enough mileage to warrant a diesel.

Cars that would be perfect to learn on are Punto's, Polo's, Fiesta's... Anything small and easy to park. Get used to the road and then upgrade.

I normally suggest people to go with what they want, as I have done earlier in this thread, but a re-evaluation was required since I didn't really read into your first post enough.
