VRT and VAT are two different taxes and therefore separate. If your importing from within the EU you won't have to pay tax on a 2007 car as far as I'm aware.

Nope, Knifey is correct, there is no VAT on VRT.

If you are importing a used vehicle to Ireland, from within the EU, VAT has already been paid and there is no further VAT to pay on import to Ireland.

ok thankyou apologies to knifey! I misinterpreted the information I was reading. I believe VAT must be paid for new vechicles (less than 6 months old or less than 6000 kms) coming into the state. Any VAT paid previously can be reclaimed.

However in my case as you say I will not be liable for VAT. (thank god, I was starting to panic at the figures!!)

    Thanks again for everyones help
