Car Hire Faro

    Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice on hiring a car over in Faro for a week.

The Mrs, baba and myself are heading over in about a weeks time and as I've never hired a car before, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on who to go with over there and any tips/things to watch out for (excess, other charges etc).

We will need a car seat for the baby (6 months old) as well, but looking at some of the websites, they don't allow you to book that online, it's more a case of turn up and get it on the day type of thing, which I'd like to avoid.

I'd appreciate any help any of you could give.

If you booked your ticket on-line through www.ryanair.com you have an option to booked a car hire via HERTZ on that website as well so like 2 & 1 booking. quiet handy.

    Likewise on Aer Lingus.

I use Hertz a fair bit, usually book a car seat too and they always have one when I need it. Not a problem!

There is a car hire place directly across from the door when you walk out the door of the airport which I've found the best value recently.

When you book with Ryanair or Aer Lingus, they will offer you a link to book with Hertz. This can represent a fair discount, and IIRC Hertz allow you to book car seats online.

TBH - I deal only with Hertz & Avis. I might be paying a premium for this, but neither company has let me down in the past. We were in Portimao in May, and hired a car from Hertz in Faro (booked in advance). No issues at all.

I used argus a couple of months ago and got a car for €7 :D per day. I also took their collision excess thingy. They only trouble was it was a tiny car and we struggled with luggage as the boot was tiny.
But after the journey from the airport it was perfectly adequate. Their price could not be beaten, they trawl all the cheap car hire companies.
You go out the terminal door and through the car park to a portakabin.
I think they are actually a Dublin operation and I will use them next time

Try travelrent.pt, you can book with them directly or sometimes if you use Argus.ie they are the cheapest offered on the comparison schedule. Used them for two weeks very recently and charge included 2nd driver and also all insurance except tyres and windscreen. (usually have to pay extra for those) There are some poor reviews but our two experiences with then have been positive. This time brand new Clio. By the way no trickery with fuel. if you get the car half full you return it half full and pro rata.
They are located in car park 4 at the airport which is a short walk from the terminal but at the moment a little more difficult as construction work in progress.
    Good Luck

from my experience the two cheapest rental brokers are, heading over the end of this month and getting a Polo/Fiesta for a week with full insurance for €147 with algarve driver, usually go with holidayautos

    www.algarvedriver.com

    * just checked out the argus.ie website, they seem by far the cheapest, never used them before, think i'll be going through them next time i head over..

When you going do you have time to get an additional card on your wifes credit card account, no additional charge or duty should take about 3 to 5 working days to receive it. Dont think car hire companies will accept laser or pre pay credit cards.

already on application, we recieve a confirmation letter asking for additional documents blah blah blah blah. application already took 2 weeks. I ask my wife to ring the Credit Card company (Ulters Bank) and the man said once they recieve the follow up documents they will process it again after that another 10 working days to issue the card which our flight is on Oct 30 not gonna make it. We ask the guy if we can do something to process it quick as posible and the man said that's the way they do it. :(

May be worth a try if either of you hold your main accounts in an Ulster Bank branch call into them explain the situation and ask is there anything they can do to speed things up i.e. Mark it as urgent as i said dunno if it will work but probably worth a try.

i think you will have trouble finding any car hire company that will do this. they all require a credit card in the name of the driver. Unfortunately i learned the hard way last year, i left my CC at home by accident and they wouldnt accept wife's, she didnt have her license with her so we were screwed!

    Hi All,

Just said I'd pop back in here and let ye know how I got on.

As per Copper04's post (which I didn't see until today), I booked a Megane Estate with Argus.ie and ended up with TravelRent.

Copper04's statements are all correct as well. No additional charge for extra drivers (you can have multiple additional drivers i.e. anyone with full licence over 23 I think). Car seat for baby was only €15 for the entire week (no daily charge).

The Travelrent place is out of the way all right, its actually behind car park 4 near the contruction site, so if you're looking for them, they are behind that big fence that you see at the bottom of the car park.

We didn't get our Megane Estate, but were "upgraded" to a KIA Cee'd estate . Not sure if I'd classify that as an upgrade, but the car was spotless, in perfect working order, and very comfortable, so I have no complaints there really.

There may be negative reviews out there for these guys, but personally, I'll go with them again if I head back over there.

Also, just to note in relation to fuel, we got it full so we had to bring it back full. We were in Albufeira for the week, so I said I'll fill up close to the airport, but not at the station just at the airport, as I expected it to be overpriced considering the location.
In saying this, I passed a petrol station about 18 kms or so from the airport and thought that there would surely be another one before I got to the airport. There wasn't and I had to fill up at the one at the airport.
However, I noted the price of Diesel at the one I passed out, and it was selling at 1.48 a litre, whereas I got it for 1.41 at the airport petrol station. Just thought that might be handy as a bit of info for anyone heading over there.
