    Hi all,
I was wondering if a 2.5 sata 7200rpm 16mb cache hard drive will work with the ps3? Ive heard that they do and also that they might overheat your ps3 etc. Is this true? Does anyone have one of these in their ps3 and is working ok?

will work fine - but there is a danger with 7200rpm that it does get hot.
Standard drive in PS3 is 5400rpm..

Seagate do a 5400rpm drive with 16MB of cache.. I have a 500GB version in my PS3 and it's been rock solid.
Was tempted with a 7200rpm with 32MB cache, but as PS3 uses bluray mostly I couldn't justify the increase in cost..

I stuck a Samsung M7 640GB 2.5 inch SATA II 8MB Cache, 5400RPM in my phat PS3 and haven't had any problems with it. Got it on Amazon for around 50 pounds at the time. Did a quick search on there and it's available for 46.

Like previous poster said, probably best to stick with a 5400 due to potential heating issues.

Thats an external HDD. The one were talking about here is to replace the original internal hard disk of the PS3. This is the one that I have in my phat PS3 Link

If your going to change the HDD then as has been said on numerous threads and internet forums make sure you have the correct screwdrivers. The screws holding the HDD to the caddy are made of the worse metal ever and it doesn't take much to ring the head of the screw. And obviously the other point is to make a backup of the original HDD before removing the current one. :)

Yup looks the job. The important factor with the drive is that the height needs to be 9.5mM and not larger. This is grand as it's 9.5mM.

If i format and use the new hard drive, will it recognise the 2 or will i only be able to use 1 and make the 1st one unusable?

Only 1 can by associated to a PS3 at any one time. If you install the new one the data on the old one is now gone. I got stung by this before but luckily I had a 1 month backup and only lost small amounts of data.

Cheers thats what i needed to know! Annoying cause some of the saves files of newer games cant be copied onto a small hard drive. What exactly will be backed up in the back up feature? Saved games, saves files etc i assume?

I think it's pretty much everything except trophies so make sure you synch these before you start. I'm open to be corrected though as it's been a while since I had to restore mine.
