UCD Debate

    Hello everybody.

Just thought you might want to know how four of the candidates, Mary Davis, Sean Gallagher, Gay Mitchell and Michael D. Higgins, got on in the debate held last night (28/09/2011) in UCD. Given that nobody will be able to access this online or anything like that I think you all should know about it.

For me Davis was woeful and convinced me not to vote for her. She wasn't wonderful at speaking, losing track of her thoughts and wasn't not inspiring at all. She wasn't helped that she was first and had to engage in a little bit of banter after Joe Duffy, who chaired the debate and is a basterd, I mean went to Trinity, got things off to a playful start.

Gallagher was in total contrast to her, powerful, direct, inspiring. He didn't have any notes with him and was the best speaker of the lot in my opinion.

Higgins was funny throughout the night and another with a very powerful voice. My preconceived notion of him was that he has a whiny, irritating voice but when he gets going he could send us all out to war believing we could win. My only problem with him was that he kept on going on and on and on at times, especially answering questions at the end.

For Mitchell it is a little like this. Before the debate started I was really only going to focus on Davis and Gallagher because they were the two most likely candidates I was going to vote for. Davis played herself out of contention for me. Higgins played his way into contention. Mitchell did not! He seemed to go on a little bit about his own achievements and was full self-serving platitudes.

Some other notes on the nights proceedings. Gay Mitchell had a Socialist TD who lived near him when he was young with a swimming pool in his front garden.

The first question asked by the audience went something like this - While it is democratic to be allowed vote for this man, would it not be remiss of the Irish people to vote for a terrorist?

Later on one question asked each member what they had contributed to Ireland, given that there was one candidate who had done so much work for gay rights in Ireland and another who had done so much for peace on the island.

    Anyway there you go :D
