your chances of doing well in the rest of the course could be affected by onlyu scraping a pass. A lot of the basics are covered in first year commerce and they carry them through to the rest of the degree!! it could be very hard to pick up some of these things in the next few years so do your best in first year but remember to enjoy college life as well.

Most students I've spoken to can't remember much of what they "learnt" the previous year.

"Education is what remains when everything you learnt in school is forgotten", Albert Einstein said that. But then again he was dyslexic LOL!

Not alone does it not matter how you do in first year, it doesn't matter how you do in ANY year! Woooooooo!

As a final year student I can say that first year does not matter, enjoy it while you can OP.

Yes it matters if you're going for jobs. If you go for the accounting/finance firms they will be hiring at the start of your third year so you will only have your 1st and 2nd year results to show them. Also, **** grades at any point in your degree never look good.

Commerce is not that hard to get a B average in.

If you go through the normal finance/accounting 'milkround' in the final year of your undergrad the 1st year results on the transcript can make a big difference. For a student with a chance of a 1.1 degree 1st year generally isn't that much of a challenge so it's worth the few extra hours work to get out with a decent result.

Depends on what you're looking for.

Just because it may not count towards your degree, doesn't mean it doesn't matter. As said above, things like summer internships etc will only be available to students with great results in every year, but if your going for a normal job or going into the civil service etc it wouldn't matter.

Tbh, it makes the best students look better when the majority don't care about 1st year.

Of course it matters. Every year in a course is important. I'm in 3rd Year Information Technology and 90% of what we learned in 1st Year is still the foundation of what we're doing today.

I don't understand why anyone would even ask that question. Having the craic while still doing well in your exams is perfectly possible.
