    Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting my attic insulation topped up and have the option of getting it rolled out or blown in.I know the blown in option is very messy but from an insulation point of view what is the best?

    Thanks

depends on whether you have a Vapour barrier above the ceiling plasterboard. imho if you do not then excess moisture can rise into the attic and dampen the cellulose blown insulation. so i'd go with mineral wool batts or if the budget will stretch hemp batts or the holy grail sheepswool, as all these will allow a degree of moisture throu. I'm not convinced on the foam based insulations and think there better suited to new build closed wall systems than retro-fitted attics.

also your attic will be ventilated, so unless your designing your eaves with ventilators high enough as not to have an effect on the cellulose, then id go for roll out myself.

cellulose is more applicable to warm roof constructions IMHO

Thanks for the replies. The house is about 10 years old and has already gotten about 4 inches laid runnimg parallel to the joists. The attic is vented along the facia.
This is what the company propose to use:

The sales guy told me that they would roll it out if I prefered

    edit:
you are not allowed link to specific companies.
    regards

look i think the stuff is great, but no where onn the website does it mention how it works with moisture. I would also expect to see an IAB or BBA cert of the specific product used....
I have installed cellulose and in another instance shovelled it out of an attic when doing an extension BUT in both instances there was a air-tightness/Vapour Barrier between it and the downstairs..

can you not go to woodies or B&Q or your local building providers and install a couple of hundred mm mineral wool yourself?

It's part of the whole SEAI warmer homes initiative so I'm getting the attics topped up with insulation and walls pumped so it's part of the package as such.
I think I iwll ask them to just roll it out

from an economic point of view, assuming the cellulose is more expensive than the fibre, the grant makes up a higher percentage of the over all cost if you go for fibre
