    Hi,
I filled out the necessary information online today to get my tax back, (tax on rent, tax on refuse collections and medical expenses). I'm just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how long approximately will I have to wait before I get this payment processed?

first of all, do the tax credits come into immediate effect?

At the moment, anywhere between 4 - 6 weeks.

When Revenue process your claim for credits, they will forward details of your allowances on to your employer, who will refund your emergency tax. Credits will come into effect from the time your employer receives them.

so i dont have to do anything from now, since i applyed for my tax credits last week?

do i not have to fill out form 12a or what is that?

The 12A is an application for tax credits. It's only really needed when registering with Revenue for the first time.

When your tax credit cert arrives , make sure that it is issued as cumulative .

If tax office decide to put you on a 'week 1 ' basis until year end , then you would not receive your emergency tax back yet .

For instance , if you have had more than one employer this year , or you have been drawing SW benefits , then it is possible that you could be pout on a week one basis .

Check your cert to see if it says ' for tax year 2011 and following years ' or if it says ' for 2011 week 1 '

It would all depend on your circumstance for the first 9 months this year .

If everything is in order , you would receive your emergency tax back through employer payroll .

    * this denotes that the employment tax credit certificate was issued on a week 1/ month 1 basis.

what does that mean i have to do now?

It means that you will not receive your tax back that you have paid .

In January 2012 , you should gather all P60's /P45 for 2011 and apply for a balancing statement .

You could ring the tax office , but it is unlikely that they will change their minds and issue a cumulative cert at this stage of tax year .

    thanks allthedoyles,

thats pretty disappointing tbh. but i taught a p45 is for when your leaving a job?

and is there anyway i can calculate exactly the amount of emergency tax im due to get back?

    Correct about the P45.

What you will need to do , is gather together all taxation documents relevant to tax year 2011 , and send a request to the tax office for a balancing statement for 2011 .

This statement will determine your entitlement to tax back and also teh amount .
