    Cops = America
Protect and Serve = also America

They're closing down rural Garda stations, not sure that's a good thing.

Ya I know that. Its what I prefer too say.

Were I live We have none even though theres a station there for them. We either get out from roscommon or ballinasloe.

Thats a bit late by the time they come if your house is been robbed etc.

There seems to be plenty of them. They just dont seem to do much when they are called out. Their advice seems to be of the" when he murders you get someone to give us a call "variety.
Look at the thread running at the moment" my housemate tried to kill me last night"
They should have a badge on their uniforms saying "Ah sure thats life"

No we dont and the ones we do have are under resourced, as a country and as a country being run like a business then there is just no money for extra recruitment now. it will be the same for years to come, instead of not selling of our natural resources and not selling our state companies and instead trying to figure out how to run them properly and indeed with profit as any viable business should be we are just looking for a quick euro and in future times this will be seen as a disaster and a reason why we cant afford proper amounts of emergency service personel.

They are in the towns and cities but they are struggling too

The days of the rural garda who lived in the area and knew everyone and their business are over

Rural stations being shut and most of that was done during Celtic Tiger times when the country had money.
If there was no resources then there will definitely be no new resources now

Any dealings anyone I know have had with the Gardai has been met with the I couldnt give a ****e attitude or I need to dosomeone for something asap.

This could allbe downto them being under staffed whichwould lead toanyone becoming pissed off but these are the menand womenwhoare meant tostand up for citzens instead of leaving use to defend ourselves. But when you do defend yourself they'll be the very ones to do you for it!

Anywhere where there is Law & Order is good to live in and when lawlessness takes over it sends the price of houses up in other areas. The Whole Mortgage Industry depends on Mayhem in other parts of any Town.Is that the case or am i missing something here.?I might not have the picture correctly. We also have a Booming security industry that may be here to stay.

lets bash the gardai blah blah blah blah..................

so the government dont have money, they cut back, they cut back gardai big time, huge numbers retiring, no-one replacing them.

    what do ordinary citizens do?
complain about the guards of course!!!

god forbid they would complain to their local representative about lack of gardai in their area.

we should start a thread, bashing gardai. again.

because none of them feel the pinch, none of them have been hit wit cuts.

none of them are sent out to police protests by people complaining about the very cutbacks guards are dealing with.

ever stand on the side of the road with people shouting abuse at you, your there to keep the peace, you agree with what the people are saying and yet you still have to do your job??????

just to used to garda bashing on here, sorry, rant over!!!!!!!!!!

I do wonder, however, if it will ever be occupied!

The crooks need longer sentences, and I'm certain that the Guards are just as pissed off as the rest of us when the judges don't hand them out.

Depends on the crime, of course. We have one old biddy in jail for refusing to let the ESB in to erect power lines, plus a fair few who can't pay fines and on the other side we have people who have defrauded millions who are still walking free.

And what if the house mate goes to the police station and says that duggy tried to kill him. Should they both go to prison? Or just one. Do the police flip a coin. If i go in and say herosa tried to kill me. Will they lock you up.

No we dont and I think it is absolutely shocking that rural garda stations are being shut down. I remember not long ago a girl was attacked in the next town from me. She managed to get away from her attackers and ran to the garda station which was closed and was raped in the grounds of the station.
That makes me sick, how the f*ck can that happen. There should be no such thing as a closed garda station they are paid to "serve and protect". Criminals dont work 9-5 so neither should guards.

Legalize drugs and hire civilians to do reception and administrative work.

On a pro-rated basis we have just under 75% the police per population as London does:

    32,000 for 8,000,000 people = 1 officer per 0.0040 people
    13,000 for 4,600,000 people = 1 officer per 0.0028 people

and crime soars there anyway. That's all city, you'd think that would be easier to manage with less people as transporting them is not as hard.

We need more Gardaí. 15,000 should be the continually maintained level.

The Gardai all over the country are under resourced and under funded. There's not enough manpower in man areas and there's not enough overtime budget to increase the workload on the guards that remain. They do a very unenviable job that results in a lot of abuse and ill-feeling. Mainly from those that don't know better. They have a tough tough job and end up in a lot of no-win situations and they certainly get no thanks for it.

We need more Guards and we need more stations open as well.
What I can't understand is, when I went to get my passport form stamped and signed, there were a couple of guards behind the desk, each filling out paperwork. Why isn't there a civillian doing that job? Or why not some of the Garda Reserves, why can't they do it and let some real guards back on the street?
Another thing is, why aren't they armed? Like the cops in Germany or even America?
Also I find the attitude of most(not all) of the Guards to be: Go slow so when we get there the criminals will be gone a loong time or *during a break-in* Can ye get someone to call after the criminal(s) have robbed your house / Taken you Hostage / Sexually assaulted you etc. etc.

An armed police force just increases the number of armed crooks and accidental shootings of bystanders. That's the last thing we need.

They have the guns for when they need them, they don't need them to check your car tax!

What I mean is give them tasers , pepper spray etc. so should they deal with an armed crook they have a leg to stand on. Anyway more crooks are going around now with knives etc. so they are still bearing arms while the Guards, if they want to disarm an armed crook have to call in the RSU, which is a bit silly especially if it is a situation that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later.

Guns should only be used as a last resort, I wasn't saying that they should be waving them around willy nilly lol

Actually we don't need Guarding any more we need full on Policing.

Go into Dublin city centre any time of the day or night and you hardly see a 'Gard' anywhere and the place overrun with open drug dealing, junkies, pickpockets, and so called menacing petty criminals.

When you look at Garda numbers you have to remember that they are broken up into 4 units and specialist units too. So the actually number working at any time is less than a quarter of official numbers. Once you take into account the ranks and manpower assigned to desks then the number of regular Gardaí working at any time is much smaller.

I hate posts like this. Baseless hyperbole.

There are quite a lot of gardai around the city centre, day and night. If you spend any amount of time in the city centre you will see them.

Also, what exactly does a pickpocket look like? And have you ever been 'menaced' by a petty criminal?

Or maybe your right, the whole world's gone to ****, it's terrible Joe.
