HI guys, embarrassed so going guest for this one.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for rent supplement to kick in?

I left in all my forms last wednesday and haven't heard a thing since and i'm getting worried as i have to pay €146 in rent on friday and i only get €147.

I really could do with it kicking in before friday cos i can't afford food unless it does, only been drinking milk since tuesday cos it fills me up so i won't need food but i can't do that for much longer.

i would imagine its like waiting for any state benefit payment...It will be weeks rather than days id say

You should go back to the Community Welfare Officer and ask for an emergency payment to tide you over. That will also speed them up in processing your rent supplement application.

Also remember that the St. Vincent de Paul will help you keep body and soul together till things are sorted. http://www.svp.ie/Contact-Us.aspx

You should tell people around you that you are in this bind. Also, if you are in a town, there is bound to be a place where you can access food. If there is a Franciscian order or indeed any religious order, or minister of any denomination, just go to their office door and ask for food. They would let you know where else you could go for help. The Vincent de Paul would be the best if you can access them close to you and if there is no contact details for close to you, then contact the national office and tell them where you are and how you can be contacted.

If your rent is €146 a week, that's pretty crazy. Can't you rent somewhere cheaper? You'll be waiting quite a while for your rent supplement.

Other than that you could also go to the generous CWO folks as other posters suggested.

Rice is cheaper than milk and will fill you up more. Add an egg and some peas for a nutritious meal. :D

Thank you guys so much for replying and especially Balagan, for the links and info to tide me over! very very much appreciated!

Tenchi-fan, good idea with the rice, i'll definitely do that :)

That is 2 weeks rent as i had to take last weeks to pay off some of the ESB so they wouldn't disconnect!

Thanks again, fingers crossed it doesn't take much longer!

If a CWO hasn't been out to you to assess your accomodation, that has to happen first, and they don't usually warn you when they're coming (so make sure you stay at home!). Once he/she calls out, it is a matter of days to a week maximum, but it depends on whether you filled out the forms correctly and/or the area you are renting in (CWO could be very busy)
