Hi looking for any suggestions for club makes etc or any shops to go to in the south Dublin area. Thinking of buying a starter set and I'm wondering how much I should be looking to spend or what to buy.

    Thanks

You're better off buying a decent second-hand set on Adverts.ie. You cannot go wrong with something like these http://www.adverts.ie/golf/callaway-x-14-and-cleveland-launcher/779186

This way you are getting a good set for small enough money and if you decide you don't like golf, you'll actually be able to sell something like this on again.

Another safe brand I would go for would be Ping.

Hi Mackrel. I can't help you with shops in Co. Dublin but I agree with Kace about buying a good second hand set on Adverts.ie, Donedeal.ie, Ebay, etc.

If you're starting off, go for a driver with a bit of loft. Nothing less than 10.5 degrees. There are lots of second hand 12 degree drivers available to you. Don't worry about having a 3, 4 or 5 iron in your set. They're difficult to hit well. Get something like 19, 22 and 25 degree rescue/hybrid clubs instead. My favourite club manufacturer is Ping. Buy irons with a decent sized head. I'd highly recommend Ping Zing 2 or ISI-K irons to you. (Don't buy ISI's unless the "K" is on the club as well. The K's are more suited to beginner/improver golfers). Many Callaway sets would be very suitable as well. The Big Bertha range is very good but avoid the 2004 model. Not at all as solid in "the feel department" as the other Big Berthas.

Unless you swing very fast, make sure you get regular graphite or steel shafts.

Putting is a very personal thing. Simply go with a putter that feels right for you, looks right to you and that you think you'll get the ball into the hole with. And make sure that you choose one of a suitable length. And remember also that any club can have the shaft shortened or extended.

And go out every time to enjoy yourself. You won't be a potential Major winner in the first few months but you'll enjoy all the good shots and they'll be the ones that'll make you go out again the following week.

    All the best! :)
