Well done to Alan Kelly tonight, still think he's the only Irishman to referee in the champions league and the two games I have seen him do he has been excellent.

Anyone know of any other games Irish officials have done and what do they think of the general standard of refereeing.

We ahve a few very good referee's in the league of Ireland. Richie Winter and Neill Doyle being the two best in my opinion

Well lads I'll be honest I deal with Alan Kelly, Richie Winter and Neill Doyle on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.

I'm not a big fan of Alan in the LOI as he is basically better known that n most players but I was referring to his Champions League games or Euro games he has been excellent.

Richie can make a lot of mistakes and does but he is consistent. His decision to send off the Bray player on Sunday being a bad one in my opinion.

Neill Doyle however is the best referee in the league by a long shot.

Hi Richie, welcome to the forum!

The standards of Irish officials in general is shockingly bad. As far as I can see, nepotism is what has gotten Kelly to where he is.

Haha thanks all the same but I'm a lot shorter and have more hair than poor Richie Winter :P

But your right the overall standard isnt great at all although there are a few up and coming young referee's who hopefully get trained better and improve the overall standard, the problem is you look at younger ages finals etc, always older referee's in 50's, 60's etc. This last year I referee'd 2 all Ireland Colleges league quarter finals and one semi final, the youngest person other than me to do one of these was 46, I was 22 then. Its a joke, I only got that because the two colleges asked me to do it. Younger referees arent given the chance. They are stuck doing 9a side or u 12's, 13's etc. fine start off doing those for a year, 2 years, working on decisions, actions etc, then 2 years at the likes of a higher divison of u16s then move them into a LSL or AUL league

Alan Kelly is possibly the worst referee I have ever seen.

Kelly is very over rated. Referees in Ireland do have a occasional good games but by on large they are quite poor.

It's a combination of a God complex, lack of common sense and arguably the biggest one, hands being tied by the referee assessors.

Something that annoys me about Irish officials is that the linesmen are usually petrified of making a decision. They don't put their flag up until the ref has already made the decision.

That pisses me off a lot.

Biggest one is the Random Decision Maker they use, when the whistle goes both sets of fans then ponder whats about to happen.

I have to tell you one of the reasons for this, most assistant Referee's are younger than the referee. They are afraid of the referee saying they are crap. I was on the line in a colleges quarter final. Flagged for a penatly (in my head to hell with what age I am and what age the ref is, if its a penalty Im calling it) and the referee in his 40's told me to put the flag down and stop waving it.

In which case you should tell him where to go.
Referees too often take the decision for the linesman, when in theory they should be following the linesman's advice (Especially for corners, throw ins,...)

Every league thinks its referees are crap.

    Losing battle.

That can be hilarious at times, although it is infuriating as well.

Yes, I figured that was the reason. It's same around the world though. Linesmen are younger (or at least less experienced) than refs. I think it must be somethig they are actually told in the LOI, to not make a decision until the ref does first.

    Buttimer? McKeon? Hancock?

Kelly is probably the best referee in Ireland. He has very little competition and is used to being appointed to the bigger games, on telly and perhaps more used to dealing with the pressure. I would love to know how many games he referees that have late crucial decisions - penalties etc.

Hancock is the worst referee I've ever seen or ever likely to see.

Irish referees have very active betting accounts

Im not a fan of Hancock at all as a ref. Don't rate him at all but once again I will say Neil Doyle is the best referee in the league. By a long shot. He's a FIFA ref now and hopefully he moves up the UEFA ladder and gets more high profile Irish games

Despite the howler of not spotting Devlins goal against Bray a couple of seasons ago and one or two other mistakes I think Kelly is currently the best ref in the country by a long shot, really doesn't say a lot for the rest of them though.

Care to expand on that statement?

Apologies i worded that incorrectly. IMO i think they must have active betting accounts. Ive seen decisions at games as a neutral that are beyond belief. I can get my head around refs having bad games but ive seen outright cheating many times. Refs get their expenses paid and few extra quid for doing the games, there is no way the temptation of making large sums of money from betting hasnt tempted some of them. The managers are not allowed question them, the attendances are small and the is little media coverage, its an easy crime. If the players are at it, you can guarantee the refs are.

Did you ever see their da in action?

And guess what job he had recently? (Not sure if he still has it).

As for Doyle, he's consistent when doing a Shamrock match, that's for sure.

Had forgotten about Buttimer! I've had a hatred of Kelly that won't go away ever since the Galway United/Drogheda playoff second leg a few years back, where he single handedly robbed Galway of promotion.

And then there's the cup replay against Cork in Cork with a Cork referee when Cork get a nonsense last minute penalty to win it.

I still prefer Kelly to Anthony "race you for your wages" Buttimer.

I thought Connolly had a good game at the cup final last year, but has been largely useless like the rest of them this year, very eager with the cards.

So as I thought, you have absolutely no proof. Just ridiculous presumptions.

Probably the best Drogheda game I've ever been at.
