I am looking to do a good course in statistics part-time, with a recognised qualification to at least Diploma Level. It seems to be very difficult to find any institution that actually does one. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank You.

Open university offer a DipStat, as do Trinity, although you wont be able to apply until next August. OU modules commence January as far as I know. Also, the royal statistical society offer professional membership exams, which are held in Dublin every year around April I think (should be easily google-able) at various levels, although these are very much self-learn courses.

I'm hoping to do the OU one soon, money-permitting

I've just started MST 121 Using mathematics with the Open University with the aim of completing the Diploma in Statistics. Here's the link to the course http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/qualification/d44.htm
From the searching I did on the net, it was the only part time course I could do outside of Dublin. You've missed the registration for October 2011 but they'll be starting again in January 2012. I think this January will be the last January start, from next October onwards, courses will only be starting in October, so you may need to take this into account if you decide to this course, as it will dictate how long it will take you to complete the course/how many modules you decide to take at one time.

Going ok so far, haven't really done much yet. While it really only officially started on the 1st October, we were sent a revision pack after registering which covered what they expected you to know prior to starting the course. The revision pack consisted of what I would consider JC higher level maths so it was a good way of revising and ensuring you were up to the expected level. It also contained 2 assignments to complete (one online and one to be sent to your tutor) to test you on the revision material. The main course material (a mixture of written/DVD/audio as well as mathematical software) only arrived to me last week and if I'm honest I haven't really gone near it yet.

I'm doing MST 121 as a way of getting back into maths again/getting used to online study. It doesn't actually form any part of the Diploma of Statistics, but they do expect you to be up to the level of MST 121 for the Diploma in Statistics modules.

So far, I have found the Open University well organised. Once you register, you receive a revision pack. You are also assigned a tutor who will correct your assignments and who you can contact if you are having problems with your work. The tutor will also run a few tutorials over the course so you still have a chance to meet up with fellow students. The tutors are based around Ireland (my tutorial will be about an hour from where I live so its not too bad). The OU student website is really good as well, as it has all the study material available on it ( you still receive a hard copy of it as well) as well as chat forums where you can discuss the course material with other students. It also contains organizers/calenders to help you plan your study.

So far, I've found the OU very good to deal with. I got a call a few weeks after registering to see how I was getting on and letting me know they were at the end of the phone if I had any problems. I also have some health issues which I mentioned at registration so they emailed me a form that I could fill in to let them know how it might affect my studies. They also followed this up with a call to me, just to ask how they could help with things in relation to study, both now and in future modules.

So so far, so good. I just have to buckle down and do the work:)

Thanks for the feedback (and apologies for the thread hijack)

My resolve is now firm! Although I'm going to try skip the preliminary math module since money is extremely tight. Will probably need a few weeks on khanacademy though....
