    hi all,
my friend is going to buy a september 2006 honda accord 2.2 cdti, executive with 114k miles.

i hear alot of bad stories regarding this car mostly engine trouble and some say they are worse than the 2litre passat/audi..
the guy is looking 4200 sterling for it. clean car otherwise..

are they a good buy or is it best avoided.

    thanks

I'm looking at getting the same car, they seem to be reliable from what I've been told, I believe there can be a fault with the timing chain on some of them though. AFAIK if it's under warranty then a Honda garage here will honour it and fix it for free but I stand to be corrected on this.

Well I've a 2006 one and it's never given me any mechanical problems. I find the seats a bit deep and hard and I find the clutch and dead pedal are too close together alright. No reliability issues though.

would be well out of warranty

think this one the newer model with 6sp gearbox but over 100k miles - probably too dear at that price

    kincaid,

If the seller can't prove that it was serviced all the time with the proper 0w-30 fully synthetic oil, then walk away.
Honda extended the warranty on the timing chain, but they want full service history for that.
Honda Ireland is not part of the global Honda operation and they getting fed up to pay out for these warranty issues with UK imports (but Honda Ireland is still more flexible than Honda UK when it comes to warranty...).
We have seen a pile of imported Accords with timing chain troubles and it mostly was caused by using the wrong oil.

A friend of mine just sold a mint condition 2006 executive one of these (traded it in). Ok he only did something like 50k miles in the 5yrs but he had not an ounce of trouble with it...

We recently sold a couple of pretty high mileage Accord Exec models.

This one - http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Accord/2.2-EXEC/201136204351266/advert?channel=CARS had the manifold replaced by Honda at 154,000km, 2 roll bar bushes at 220,000km and apart from servicing and tyres, there hasn't been much else done to it since new. There isn't even a clutch replacement listed.

Second one has higher mileage. Battery was replaced at 254,000km, 2 drive shafts were replaced at 195,000, Clutch was replaced at 120,000km, and apart from that it's just servicing and tyres.

There did seem to be quite a few damaged tyres between the 2 cars, but I suspect that's more to do with the drivers and the area's they covered, rather than an issue with the vehicles.

'04/'05 are known for the timing chain issue. As you said, incorrect oil can help it to the end of it's life.

Honda have an extended 7 year warranty on the 04/05's but the car must have

    - A full Honda service history or proof fully synthetic 0W30 oil has been used
    - Less than 125k miles
    - Under 7 years old.
