Drumming with DJ / Ableton for live show?

Does anybody here do this? Or seen it done? Anyone have any thoughts?

I have been DJing for yonks but also drumming for about 15 years (give or take), and recently I got a set of electronic drums, which I have been enjoying bashing the sh!te out of :)

I'd love to put together a decent show.

I am thinking of either using Ableton myself on a lappie beside the kit and triggering loops etc or getting a mate to do it and form a duo. Just for the craic. Do live production with ableton live etc etc.

    Any thoughts?

If you can do it - go do it.

What's the samples playing back on? Are you having a latency problem?

    Explain?

I don't play drums myself - but I think it could be a really great way to get grooves and stuff. It's something you could something great from... if it works.

I am not having latency issues because I am using the sounds on the kit itself (as opposed to triggering samples with it).

basically this evening I was playing around with loops in ableton.. using them to build up tracks etc over which I would play fat drum beats.

I am sending the ableton audio out of my soundcard and into the drumkit's hardware mixer, and from there to the speakers - so there's no latency.

I have seen it done... sort of... but not in the same way I envisage this. The disconauts over in Galway used to do a DJ / drum thing back in the day but I cant remember much about it, or even whether it was any good or not!

I have been looking on youtube for something similar as well and can't seem to find anything I would consider decent.. I only have the kit 2 days so still feeling my way along really.

Just curious if any DJs / producers here ever jammed with a drummer in this capacity and what their thoughts are is all :)

Check out a dude called Rarely Seen Above Ground.

Pretty sure it's the kind of vibe you are aiming for.

Yeah I know RSAG - I am actually from Kilkenny too! Kind of similar with the drums alright but again he is not DJing / triggering loops on the fly and his sound is a lot more acousitc / organic than the sound I am going for. Plus he plays all his own songs and sings whereas I would be happy using a mix of my own noises and samples and believe me, you don't want to hear my singing!

Hmm... I'll do some experimentation and report back!

Used to have a guy do percussion(well mainly bongos) when i was djing. It works well because it just fit with the music, not sure how a full Kick/snare/hats thing would work though, but sure you might aswell give it a go

Studiorat that looks and sounds like a band

@ Laserface that is pretty much exactly what I wanted to do :( dammit he got there before me!

Nice sounds though. Fair play to him. The original sounding bstrd:)

OK. Well back to square one.... Any D n B producers want to put on a live show with their stuff on ableton (minus beats of course) and me giving it socks on the drums?

Jesus Christ I am just looking at his other videos - he even even covered Da Funk live on drums... I thought that was MY original idea :(

This is a disaster! Just as well I asked before I put a **** load of effort into an original live set that someone devised 2 years before me.

Maybe someone put the idea in my head when I was sleeping like in that documentary Inception with Leo Di Caprio...

haha.. glad to be of help.. but i almost regret it :(

as far as i'm aware.. he doesn't play live much these days.. so theres always room for more .. and your productions will never turn out as you want them too anyway. for example.. i always wanted to make severe breakneck drum and bass with lashings of 303 acid.. but lately i usually end up making girly floaty ambient numbers instead

so you should still give it a bash

where are you based? the collab sounds interesting
