Gagging in throat

I presume this is the proper place to ask medical questions, if not, let me know.

In the last 6 months I have been experiencing bouts of gagging sensations in my throat. I am 23 and am a smoker and I first noticed it while smoking a cigarette. It feels like a constricting in my throat which causes me to gag when I try to continue to smoke or try to talk.

The feeling soon passes but has recurred from time to time after that. It is usually triggered by a cigarette or when I sing and leaves me unable to speak at any length (as I start gagging) for a while after.

Also, I have had a persistent cough for the last 3 months which was frequent enough to make me pull muscle in my back from coughing. The cough is fairly OK now, but in the morning a can experiencing coughing which also tightens my airwaves and leave me gasping for breath for a few seconds after each cough.

I have been smoking for about 6 years, and I'm wondering why this might have begun so suddenly and will it go away itself?
