Shirt preservation

I recently started a new job and in the 6 or 7 weeks I have been here, I have had to throw out 5 shirts because they ripped at the elbow. It isn't a quality issue as they were pretty new Canali, Zegna, and Gieves & Hawkes shirts. So it must be something to so with the surface of my desk or the armrest on my chair.

Has anyone experienced this before, or have any ideas for a solution? Obviously I'm not getting patches sewn onto my shirts.

    Thanks in advance

    Get a bigger size.

Buy a large blotter for your desk. I have one thats a laminated map of the world, you won't be putting your elbows on the desk surface then.

    Or buy a bigger size.:)

Your name is Bruce and your shirts keep ripping

Do your shirts usually rip when you get angry?
have you noticed any of your skin turning green?
have you ever been exposed to copious amounts of gamma radiation as a child?

It is entirely possible that you sir are in fact The Incredible Hulk

if this is the case then different brands of shirts wont help you

A table mat seems like a reasonable solution. Failing that (and don't hate me for this) but have you concidered either keeping your elbows off the desk or wearing short sleeved shirts.
I don't have the same issue but that might be because I rest my arms/elbows on one of those gel filled wrist support cushions rather then on the desk directly.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

In fairness to the poster, it was genuinely funny.

Have quite honestly never heard of this problem problem before. Even if you just wore the same five shirts each week, this shouldn't happen. Are they of a particularly delicate material, such as a voile or cotton/linen mix? That's the only thing I could possibly think of.

I have to, HAVE TO, pull you up on this.

Just wrong, wrong, wrong unless one wants to look like Dilbert.

There simply must be a reasonable solution to be found before recommending such extreme measures ;)

Yeah I know but it's not like someone asking ME to wear them. :D

Ha! You're not far off. My name is not necessarily Bruce but I am probably closer in build to Lou Ferigno than to Bruce Seven (R.I.P.)

Another one just went today. It's a size 18 so I can't get any bigger off the shelf. I am normally a 17 1/2. Was a good quality Gieves and Hawkes cotton shirt that I have worn less than 10 times.

I think it may have to do with the armrest on my chair which is particularly hard plastic. I might try to do some amateur uphostering on it, or try to steal someone else's late this evening.

This happens to me all the time as well, I dont think its the shirt too small as I usually have to buy one too big (I have boobies). I think its how you sit as any shirt or cardigan no matter how good the quality will happen. I would go with the suggestion of getting one of those things for under your wrist so you arent leaning on your elbows.
