? update/facelift planned for skoda superb estate

    Hi Folks,

Due to expanding family have been looking at practically every make of new estate car out there at the moment for a 30-35K budget. Have decided that the skoda superb estate (170 bhp) in elegance trim is top of the pile apart from a few issues which may be a deal breaker.

-Small fuel tank (60 litres) giving a shorter range than some others in the class
-Related to above is a combined mpg of mid- 50'S which is also poor compared to others in the class
-Again related to above is poorer CO2 emissions putting the 2.0l diesel (170 bhp) into the 302 euro tax bracket.

While I appreciate that spending 35K on a new car and quibbling about an extra 150 euro a year road tax sounds silly but its a combination of the above issues that is holding me back. BTW the other estate option is the new peugeot 508 SW in allure spec.

My question is, the above skoda engine has been out for some time now, is there a facelift/update due any time soon? especially when the VW passat estate has the same power with much better economy/emissions.

    Any replies much appreciated.

Excuse me if I am wrong here but isn't the curent Superb the B6 ? Out since about 08 or so.

I'd imagine it'll be a few years before she's facelifted tbh. I could be wrong but couldn't imagine it's due one yet.

TBH though, what attracted me to this thread if this

I am not a VAG fan.

    I am an estate fan.

The Superb is possibly one of the best looking Estates (short of a V70) on the road at the moment. A stunner of a car.

The 2.0 TDI 170 I cant see being changed until the model is updated but is 302 tax a big deal on a power plant like that anyway ?

I don't see how you could complain that mid 50's mpg in a car as big as the Superb is poor... Spending 35k on a car an extra 150 quid is very little.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

I have that engine in a smaller car and you will be doing very well to see mid 50's unless it involved a constant cruise between 80-90kph. The beat I've seen from a tank is 47mpg.

Agreed but as Ive mentioned spending the extra 150 quid a year is not a big issue for me, its rather the combination of issues Ive raised especially if there was a update/facelift due sometime soon which may address some of these.

I'm waiting on 2012 pricing from my Skoda dealer, but I'm not expecting any great differences from this year. Have just been informed of 2 2012 spec Octavia Ambiente's that landed to the dealer today, which have built in Nav as standard now, so there might be some spec changes on the Superb too.

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/skoda/2012-skoda-superb-ar116552.html suggests that there is a facelift due to be unveiled in March 2012 with some engine upgrades too.

I had a 170 ambition for a week or so, and I was getting some very good consumption figures from the OBC. Somewhere between 4.2l/100km and 4.6l/100km depending on traffic, for my daily commute. That's 61 - 67 mpg and gives a theoretical range of around 1,400km for the 60 litre tank.

Go all the way and buy a 520 D estate or an 11 UK one from a BMW dealer with extended warranty and service package.

    or here's a 10 new model for 27000 sterling

I think the sat nav is in place of the Bolero stereos as there's a shortage. It's the Amunsden and not the Columbus one but a very handy free extra.

    .

I'd be happy with mid 50's mpg from a car that size

In relation to the emissions bracket, its a small trade off for 170bhp and size of car

I dont get this...The Superb estate is obviously better looking than its saloon/hatch counterpart, but its no stunner
The V70 is streets ahead in terms of looks and others aswell IMO

If ever a car needed an arse and facelift it is the Superb, although the estate is certainly better than the hatchaloon. OP, given how long lead times are and that you are near 2012 and a facelift I would wait if at all possible.

That sounds like it, it's run from a CD, unless you download it on to an SD card and use that.

They are actually Elegance models rather than Ambiente's.

302 in tax is nothing , 50mpg still amazing fuel economy ,

a 530d would be my choice but anyway...

I have the same spec car as EPM.
    My average is 42mpg.
The Best i have seen was on a trip from Cork to Edenderry a couple of weeks ago on mostly motorway
    Averaged 57 mpg I think ( 5.4/100 )

Agreed, this would be my preferred option but the new car will be my wifes and she has been turned off BMW's by some of the repair bills on my own BMW (335i) hence the reason to purchase a new estate that would be covered by manufacturer's warranty for a number of years.

Well you should read it again so.

.....best looking estates short of a v70

And that comment is based on my opinion. Much like your comment is based on your opinion. :)

I would just like to say that the 159 estate is clearly the best looking estate...:D

Of course it is, but it's too small and no longer in production.

I actually think the Superb is a better looking estate than the current V70. The rear of the latter always looked wrong IMO.

The problem with the 159 is that it had a high bootlip for an estate...its more of a big hatch. Only reason why I ruled it out when I was looking for an estate...

That said it looks great, especially in Ti spec. There is a nice 2.4 diesel Ti spec on Carzone right now:D

OP, I am on my second Superb Elegance 170 Salon/Hatch and get between 40 to 45mpg stop start driving around town but between 55 and 65mpg on a longer motorway spin.
As for the update, there is a very mild (lights & very little else) facelift coming for the 2013 model year.
The reason that the Passat has lower CO2 is because of different power steering, start stop and tyres mostly.
Nice car the Superb estate, get one.

Do you mind if I ask what other cars you're considering as "others in the class"?

Well then just continue to renew the warranty. Yes it's a yearly outlay once the 3 year warranty is up but it's a small price to pay to have piece of mind and one of the best cars on the road.

Have looked in depth at- Peugeot 508 SW, Ford Mondeo estate, Citroen C5 estate, Mazda 6 estate etc. Out of these the Peugeot 508 SW is the other front runner.

I'd touch the Mondeo out of all of them but would preference the Skoda.

Out of the 4 cars you have listed there the Superb beats them however it's very close between it and the Peugeot. I'm not sure though how many of those cars have 170bhp engines with roughly 50mpg though just off the top of my head.I think Ford has 163bhp diesel engine but that's it...

Peugeot's website says a 163bhp Auto is the top model, that's presumably the same motor Ford buy in for the Mondeo. 72 litre tank, combined cycle figure 5.7.

Surely that car costs more than a Skoda Superb?

i dont see what all the fuss is about the Peug 508...

drove by a Hyundai garange today and they had a couple of i40's out front and they really look better than the pics which was hard

First couple of the i40's I saw were on a transporter, and I thought they were Accord estate's. Only went for a close up look as I'd been told the Accord Estate was discontinued.

Don't think it's in the same league size wise as the Superb though.

In the right specification the Superb Saloon/Hatch can look just about passable - think of this combo in the combi :)

I see the spec for the 163 bhp diesel estate, but not a price.

In the saloon, the fully-loaded 508 Auto is €35,150, the Superb DSG Elegance hatchaloon is €36,895, so I'd say the SW and Combi are also similarly priced.

I don't see why it wouldn't stack up against a Skoda.

The BMW 5 is nice, but €15K dearer. The i40 is €10K cheaper, not in the same class.

Had an extended test drive in the Hyundai i40- liked the look of it very much but its spec level was not comparable to the Skoda or indeed the Peugeot for that matter- no option of leather/half leather seats (especially usefull with toddlers), 5 speed gearbox which mated to the engine I drove wasn't that sprightly. It handled relatively poorly (similar to the Citroen), not as good as the mondeo which was the best drivers car, followed by the Peugeot and very closely followed by the Skoda. Overall the Peugeot SW was quite a good car and its suprising that there is not that many on the roads at the moment.

It hasn't been on sale that long, launched in [quick Google] April, and I'd assume there's a long wait for an order.
