Re: recent discussions on key based car theft

(I've been off air more or less for a few weeks so sorry if already discussed)

My brother told me today that a second car in quick succession in his area has been stolen. House was not broken into.

Guard said that some key cutting crowd in the Dublin area was broken into and had their database lifted. Data is either being sold on or used directly to recut/code keys.

This may be bs but sounds plausible.

If it can be proven that any company has held details of a car key code and the respective details of the vehicle, name and address then it's going to be "sue city" because if my motor was nicked as a result of their negligence and inability to store my information (which they shouldn't be doing anyway) then I would take them to the cleaners.

havent had car keys cut myself .. my keys are original plus change of owner and all.

but for the sake of others is it allowed to say the people whos database got fleeced ?

Don't think its even known but even it it was, it can't be mentioned here without proof. Liable/slander and all that.

I have hidden button on my van as a part of alarm / security system, so you won't start it even if you'll take my keys and alarm fob (unless you are good in car electrics and have couple of hours to disable my system :))

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

On my daily hack I had an immobiliser issue that forced me to change the ecu, immobiliser and ignition barrel. Not to mention that the car wont start without finding the start button and a separate key is needed to open the drivers door (dummy lock in the passengers door) database would be useless in such a situation :) But who would want to steal a distinctive €200 van...?

By the way, anytime I got keys for cars I've never had to give details about the car it was for, is this a new thing?

I didn't state it happened. In fact I cannot prove it has ever happened but it's not beyond reasonable doubt that somebody who wants to steal your car can boil a kettle now, is it ?

    ;)

given what ive seen on a protection of peoples personal information this is viable... BUT alot of work is required ot steal a car that might not even exisit anymore.

That's the second car in his estate nicked without key being taken from the house. Latest was an Avensis.
Ryebridge in Kilcock. Plagued with burglaries and car theft.

North Kildare is down almost a dozen officers from this time last year.

On any given night there might only be 2 officers to cover an area the size of Leixlip\Celbridge\Maynooth. The same can be said for Clane\Sallins\Kilcock.

Most of the thefts are happening from 2am - 4am.

I dont know is somebody mentioned this or not, but i think, keys no need to be copied, i believe you can get all info from VIN number, and all new car VIN may be read from outside car... under front window. I think there is no problem get dealer data base these days, and cut keys and program them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭exador

Can you get a key cut by quoting the VIN without having proof of ownership and ID ? I would have thought that it would be a minimum requirement and at least make it difficult.

3am in the morning on Tuesday, two guys tried to make off with my motorbike. We heard them and chased them away. The bike is damaged though :(

I've been using public transport all week :(

Wouldnt be surprised if vigilante or at least lookout groups start popping up. Seriously out of hand.

not sure what you're saying? are you saying that its a myth that scumbags come in for a 'chat' if they cant get your car?

back in 2006 i came home from a night out to find 3 fellas sitting at my kitchen counter waiting on me. i was told either hand over my keys or they'd call me an ambulance. i handed over keys and they left. car disappeared and was used in an armed robbery 3 weeks later. car was found 2 months later in a farmers shed in west limerick.

    so yes it does happen.

car was a 2002 subaru impreza sti. they didnt even change the plates on it.

i doubt it. nissan wanted the log book, photo id and the car brought to a dealer before they would give out the radio code for my mothers micra!!

I recently got a tracker installed. All week I have it set up so if the car moves from outside the front of the house, within about 200m, it will text me the GPS location of the car every couple of minutes. If somebody disconnects the battery, it can detect this and will again continually text me the GPS location of the car until the battery backup dies. I can even ring the car and listen into the cabin.

What system is this and where can I get one? :)

hmm, not calling you a liar...but this is why I called the myth on it..I've heard the same story dozens of times...

Call me a cynic but It's a bit like the one about the girl going into pay for petrol and the attendant spotting a guy jumping in the back seat...when the garda arrived he was hiding with a <insert weapon> and rope....heard that a good few times, from colleagues friends, etc...maybe the girl knows alot of people..I doubt it though :P

Obviously I cannot go into details given it wasn't me and I don't know who else reads boards.

It happened in a small village outside Newry. The guy involved is my g/f's neighbour and he is elderly enough.

He was woken in the middle of the night, his wife was held down and the kettle of boiling water was held above his head with the instruction that he tells where the keys are and any cash which is in the house.

I'm not going into any more detail than that. Suffice to say it has at least AFAIK happened once.

If you have evidence to the contrary I'd love to hear it

Even if it was plausible to get a key cut to the Chassis no (Which I doubt is possible, a lot of modern keys Locksmiths won't do), and even if it were possible for them to somehow also have the rolling codes for the immobiliser, they'd also then need to be hauling along diagnostic gear with them to code in the keys to the car's body control module which is more than a 30 second job.

I also find it hard to believe that a third party such as a locksmith could cut a key based on the Chassis No alone. They surely couldn't possibly have access to Manufacturers sensitive data based just on a code.
