Only those who have something to hide have something to worry about.

Wow, Free Hide IP, Now only $29.95 :D
    http://www.free-hideip.com/products/free-hide-ip.html

No, a router doesn't hide your ip, your public ip is always visible unless you use a vpn or proxy to another location. They can be useful for accessing geo-blocked sites like the RTE Player from abroad

Why would it be something that the common user would need to consider OP?

The only real uses would be to access blocked sites. Other than that, for a normal surfer, no there's no real need to use one.

you do not need that to access blocked sites just change own ip by rebooting router

For the likes of sites that are blocked due to your area, or if certain sites are blocked on your network.

    you could just use Tor
then only one person will know your IP :D

they will also know all your other details :(

surely it should be illegal for anyone to hide their ip address,

i mean what if they're up to no good, how are the authorites suppose to track them down?

(not suggesting OP is up to anything)

    thats nice to hear;)

    the tor site says
For example, if you're travelling abroad and you connect to your employer's computers to check or send mail, you can inadvertently reveal your national origin and professional affiliation to anyone observing the network, even if the connection is encrypted.
how would they spy if the connection is encrypted?

It's not illegal simply because some people would just prefer that a website doesn't gather information that can be got through their own IP address. Privacy and all that. Every website picks up your IP address, for instance the admins on this board can see everyone's. A simple IP check can tell them who I'm connected with and where I'm from (although not to an exact location).

Alot of systems can pick up when a proxy is being used, and they aren't bulletproof. If it was being used for something highly illegal then it can be worked around and the users real IP address found out. Exactly why the FBI is rounding up Anonymous and LulzSec members.

If you're in Northern Ireland and you're using the likes of BT, chances are it'll point to England. But if you're in the Republic and using an Irish ISP it'll likely point to somewhere in Ireland. Some people just feel that even being linked back to the country you live in is too much information to give out. I personally couldn't care, but some people do.

considering that some Irish ISP's are planning on using NAT as a solution to the ipocalypse that's going to be a little difficult

    hang on
is fryup your real name ?

Tor does not, and by design cannot, encrypt the traffic between an exit node and the target server, any exit node is in a position to capture any traffic passing through it which does not use end-to-end encryption.

All the NSA/CIA/NWA/CSO etc need to do is to join the bandwagon and setup some exit nodes, sooner or later they will get lucky. Sooner if they have more nodes.
