Might be a bit overkill, but you could download the Adobe CS5 trial.

You'd get Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator etc

If its really just something simple you need to do, I suppose you could make one in paint.net - a free image editing tool, Much simpler than photoshop etc, but powerful enough for the novice to create some decent things in.

How hard is it to use photoshop just for simple stuff?

Is get paint the same as "paint' on windows?

Photoshop has a steep enough learning curve.

Paint.net is NOTHING like Paint :) its a much more powerful tool, but simple enough to use. Plus its totally free.

Ah, you never stated Mac :)

    There are a few alright:
Seashore is a simple enough image editing tool.
GIMP is very powerful, but a steep learning curve.
Inkscape is for vector graphics like Illustrator

Scribus is a layout program like InDesign / Quark. But it is free.

In general, you would create the graphics in an image editor, and then lay the poster out in a DTP package like Scribus or InDesign. You would also do the text in those and output to PDF.

So for a free, simple enough workflow - Seashore & Scribus :)
