Never seen or heard of it. What's it like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

I removed all the stickers and put them on as if it had been solved.

    Also, it's Rubik's not Rubix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

    Yeah by changing the stickers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,933 ✭✭✭Logical Fallacy

It must be like an older version of the tv programme "the cube" on ITV.

I thought it might be a new type of Vitamin C soluble tablet in the shape of a cube, but that would be Rubex cube.

If you follow a fairly long series of set movements, anyone can do it!

It's easy once you know how, search youtube for a tutorial and you'll see.

Rubix cubes are solved using algorithm's.

My girlfriends brother is a programmer and can do one easily.

Anyway he got himself a new one and she sent me a picture.

    Try solving this!

    I did it quite easily.

after paying 20c for an instruction book that I found in a second-hand book-shop

I done one in the back of a Taxi to impress a high flying executive who then offered me a job and bailed the taxi fair :(

no. i just peel the stickers off and rearrange them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 766 ✭✭✭mkdon05

I done it when i was about 10 and thought, Jayz thats easy, so I jumbled it up again and had another go. Never solved it a second time :(

    Just tried. Still can. Eggcellent
Managed to do the 4x4 one before aswell! Never tried any bigger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭laugh

    I learned an algorithm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,893 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

I just broke it and reassembled it. Why bother with algorithms when brute force and ignorance is just as effective :D

    NO
    I think I got 4 sides once

I then got the instructions and lost patience, then asked why and I threw the thing in the skip, being happy ever since.

    No.

... So I simply decided Rubik's cubes are stupid and I wouldn't want to solve them anyway :pac:

Nope. I don't think it's that hard.. I've looked at instructions online but never bothered to actually complete one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭-Kenny-

I can do it in two mins . handy out to win bets and stuff :D

When I was in 6th year in school I brought it in and my honours maths teacher saw it and said there impossible to solve. so I made a cheeky grin and bet her we could get homework off if I solve it , did it and homework off. Happy days .

I have a mini keychain one on my set of keys its handy for betting and winning free drinkings on nights out.

Just pull the stickers off & DON'T replace them, then write a song or poem about your emo rubik's cube refusing labels...

    Before what?

Ive always found them easy :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

I solved it by smashing it into tiny pieces.

I'm not up on these modern contraptions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,534 ✭✭✭SV

    No..came very close though.
I never even learned how to do it though..I only started to come close once I realised the colour of the centre cube was the colour that side was meant to be (Thank you Pursuit of Happyness :p )

I just thanked that for the "hweh hweh hweh". Reminds me of Dustin the Turkey.

Between this and the Clarissa/Sabrina thread, it's like Den Central here....

I was too busy on my space hopper to get involved in the Rubik cube scene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,712 ✭✭✭neil_hosey

i can do them.. took about an hour to learn the 6 or so algorithms needed..

i can now do it in about a minute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭Dingatron

I can do it in around 2-3 minutes usually. All the rage for a while when I was a kid.

You don't need much motivation to start a thread, do you?

I managed to do it once (probably a fluke because I failed many times). Recently I saw a news item in which robots were able to complete the puzzle very quickly. A fascinating piece of film, well worth watching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,342 ✭✭✭Bobby Baccala

i got angry and absolutely mashed one when i was younger then i superglued it
back together so it looked as if i had solved it

    Me clever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Hell, it was too easy so I use a 7 sided one now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭x_Ellie_x

I had one when I was a kid and I solved it easily enough. I don't think I could solve one now. I don't have the patience anymore.

    No.

are there still teachers that break them out in class?

They have 7 sided ones now?! Didn't know that. Good luck with it.

The amount of people that said they changed the stickers or broke it and rearranged it. Idiots.

I'm usually good at those sort of puzzles but no. I lost patience as well :pac:

I just smashed it to pieces. I took it out the back and smacked it off the concrete and then got a hammer and smashed the components.

I saved some of the stickers though and stuck them onto my sisters one so that she couldn't solve hers - she toiled for months before she gave up.

I just watched with a calm smile saying 'you almost have it there sis' and other platitudes.

    Happy days.

I used to be able - now I can only get one side done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

I done it - but i cheated. I printed out the instructions off a website. basically you only need to do one layer and then just learn and repeat a couple of moves over and over. It looks cool when you do it fast, like you're rain man or something, but in reality you're only mindlessly parroting 2 or 3 steps.
I used to be amazed that people could do the things so quickly, while i spent days getting nowhere - now i just feel cheated! Ha ha:D
